Automatic Pet Feeders, Explained
An automatic feeder releases set portions at set times; tray models suit a day or two, hopper models hold weeks of dry food, and Wi-Fi adds phone control.

The short answer
An automatic feeder serves your pet a measured meal on a timer, whether or not you are home. It is worth it when your schedule is irregular, when a pet eats too fast and does better with several small meals, or when you want portions to stay the same every day. It does not replace a daily check: someone still needs to make sure the food came out and the pet ate it.
How automatic feeders work
Most feeders fall into one of two designs.
Tray feeders hold each meal in its own covered compartment. A timer rotates the tray or opens a lid at mealtime. PetSafe's 2 Meal feeder has two compartments of 1 1/2 cups each and a dial timer; its 5 Meal feeder has five 1 cup compartments and a digital timer. Because the meals are pre-portioned, tray feeders can also hold semi-moist food, and PetSafe sells a refrigerated tray model for wet food that it says keeps meals at 40°F.
Hopper feeders store a supply of dry kibble on top and drop a measured portion into the bowl at each mealtime. PetSafe's FlexFeed holds 8 cups, which the maker says can feed a cat or small dog for up to two weeks, with up to eight meals a day and portion settings from 1/15 cup to 1 cup.
| Feeder (PetSafe) | Design | Capacity | Meals per day | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Meal | Tray | 3 cups | 2 | 1 AA battery |
| 5 Meal | Tray | 5 cups | 5 | 4 D batteries |
| FlexFeed | Hopper | 8 cups | Up to 8 | USB cable, battery backup |
| Smart Feed | Hopper, Wi-Fi | 24 cups | Up to 12 | AC adapter, battery backup |
Wi-Fi vs non-Wi-Fi feeders
A non-Wi-Fi feeder is programmed on the unit with a dial or buttons. It keeps working without a router or an account, and the FlexFeed page notes that no app is required.
A Wi-Fi feeder adds a phone app. PetSafe's Smart Feed lets you change the schedule, serve an extra meal and watch feeding from the app, and several family members can use it from their own phones. It needs a 2.4GHz router. The trade-off is setup and dependence on your network; check what the feeder does on its own schedule if the Wi-Fi drops.
What to check before you buy
- Food type: hoppers are built for dry food; wet food needs a tray or a refrigerated model.
- Capacity: count days, not cups. Divide the capacity by your pet's daily portion.
- Portion range: the smallest and largest portion should cover your pet's meal size.
- Power backup: a plug-in feeder with a battery backup keeps feeding during an outage.
- Cleaning: a removable, dishwasher safe bowl or tray makes weekly washing easier.
- Paw-proofing: PetSafe designed tamper-resistant lids on its 2 Meal feeder for cats that pry.
