Bidet Seat Basics: Seat vs Attachment, How to Measure

A bidet seat replaces your toilet seat and can add heat and warm water, an attachment fits under the seat you have, and three measurements decide the fit.

The short answer

You do not need a new toilet to get a bidet. The common options:

TypeWhat it isPower
Bidet seatReplaces your toilet seat; the nozzle is built inElectric or non-electric
Bidet attachmentA thin unit that fits under your existing seatOften non-electric
Handheld sprayerA spray head on a hose, mounted by the toiletNone
Bidet toiletA toilet and bidet in one unitUsually needs an outlet

Bidet seat vs bidet attachment

An attachment keeps your current seat and adds a nozzle under it. Many run on water pressure alone and need no outlet: 57 attachments on Wiki Shopping are listed as non-electric.

A bidet seat swaps out the whole seat. Non-electric seats still give you a wash with adjustable pressure, often with separate front and rear nozzles. American Standard lists their drawbacks: no heated seat, and water temperature you cannot always control. Brondell notes that some non-electric models get warm water by connecting to the sink's hot supply.

An electric seat adds heat. American Standard's electric seats offer a heated seat, adjustable water temperature and several spray patterns, but they need an outlet near the toilet. If there is none, plan on an electrician.

Is a bidet seat worth it

That comes down to what you want from it:

  • Just a rinse, lowest effort: an attachment or a handheld sprayer.
  • Warm water and a heated seat: an electric seat, if you have or can add an outlet.
  • A tight corner: Brondell says side-arm controls add about 2 inches of width. Its Swash Thinline T22 with a side arm is 17.6 inches wide, while the remote-controlled T44 is 15 inches.

On Wiki Shopping, 81 seats are listed as electric and 90 as non-electric.

How to measure your toilet for a bidet

Measure three things before you buy, as both Brondell and American Standard advise:

  1. Bowl length. From the center of the seat bolt holes to the front edge of the bowl. Brondell's guide: 18 to 19.5 inches means elongated, 16 to 17.75 inches means round. Buy the seat in your bowl shape.
  2. Bolt spread. Center to center between the two seat bolts. Most Brondell seats are built for a 5.5 inch spread, the most common one in US toilets, and many fit spreads up to 7.7 inches.
  3. Clearance to the tank. From the center of the bolt holes back to the tank. Brondell asks for at least 2 inches; 1.5 inches may work, with the seat hanging slightly past the front of the bowl.

Brondell notes that skirted toilets need top-mounting hardware for its seats. Check the product page for the exact limits of the model you want.
