Hot Tub Sizes, Seats and Inflatable vs Hard Shell

Hot tubs are sized by how many adults they seat; inflatable tubs cost less and set up anywhere, while acrylic hard shell tubs generally hold heat better.

The short answer

Hot tubs are sold by seating capacity: the number of adults the maker says fit at once. Count the people who will usually soak together, then add a seat if you often have guests. The other big choice is the build. An inflatable tub is a vinyl shell you pump up with air, while a hard shell tub has a molded acrylic shell on a frame and stays in place.

What size hot tub do I need?

Start with how many people soak at the same time on a normal evening, not the biggest party of the year. Then check the footprint against your space and the floor or ground it will sit on, since a filled tub is heavy.

Capacity labels are the maker's own figures, and the jump in size between them can be small. Intex sells its PureSpa Bubble Massage inflatable set in a 4-person and a 6-person version; the larger one adds jets (140 against 120) and Intex lists its weight as 126.5 pounds against 115.5. Wikipedia's overview notes that acrylic tubs typically seat two to seven people or more, and that most hot tubs are designed for four or more.

Inflatable vs hard shell hot tub

InflatableHard shell (acrylic)
ShellAir-filled vinyl, most often roundCast acrylic on a frame, with a cabinet
SeatingOpen floor, sit where you likeMolded seats
SetupPump up, fill, plug inDelivered and installed in place
Energy useLess efficient, per the Appliance Standards Awareness ProjectCovered by efficiency standards for longer

The Appliance Standards Awareness Project describes inflatable spas as low cost but much less energy efficient, and notes that a 2019 ANSI standard for portable electric spas was the first to cover inflatables. Roto-molded tubs, made with the shell and cabinet as one piece, sit between the two.

Of the 137 hot tubs listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 78 are inflatable and 32 are acrylic. 20 are sold as plug-and-play.

How much power does a hot tub use?

There is no single figure: use depends on the heater, the jets, the climate and the cover. Check the heater's wattage and the electrical service the tub needs on its spec sheet before you buy. The standards cover the energy a tub uses to stay hot while nobody is in it, which is where much of the yearly cost sits. Wikipedia cites research that most heat loss from an uncovered tub comes from evaporation off the water surface, so a well-fitting insulated cover is the cheapest way to cut running costs.

How we count

Seats, build and features are read from each hot tub's store listing. Tubs that do not state them are left out of those counts. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
