Dash Cam Basics, Explained

A dash cam records the road so you have video of what happened; the main choices are how many cameras it has and whether it can watch the car while parked.

The short answer

A dash cam is a small camera mounted on the windshield or dashboard that records while you drive. Its job is to leave you with video of what happened on the road. Two questions shape the choice: how many directions it records, and whether it keeps watch while the car is parked.

Is a dash cam worth it

It depends on what you want from it. Progressive's guide sums up the trade:

  • Evidence, not a discount. Progressive says it does not offer a dash cam discount, and that insurers generally do not. The value is the footage itself, which can support a claim or settle a dispute over who was at fault.
  • No approved model. Progressive notes there is no official insurance-approved dash cam, so pick one by budget, features and how you want to install it.
  • A reminder to focus. Progressive also suggests a camera in the car can nudge drivers to keep their eyes on the road.

Footage records everything, including your own driving, so it shows what really happened either way.

A front-only cam is the simplest to fit: one unit and one power cable. A rear camera adds a second cable run to the back window, but covers rear-end collisions, which a front camera cannot see. A cabin camera matters most to rideshare and taxi drivers who want a record of the inside too.

What parking mode means on a dash cam

Parking mode lets the camera keep watch after you switch the engine off. Wolfbox, a dash cam maker, explains the catch: most 12V sockets and OBD-II ports lose power when the ignition turns off, so a plugged-in camera simply stops. Parking mode needs constant power, usually from a hardwire kit connected to the fuse box.

Common parking modes:

  • Motion triggered: the camera wakes when it sees movement, saves a clip, then goes back to standby.
  • Impact triggered: a G-sensor detects a bump and locks the clip so it is not recorded over.
  • Time-lapse: a continuous, sped-up record of the whole time parked.

A good hardwire kit has a low-voltage cutoff that turns the camera off before the battery runs too low to start the car. Wolfbox's kit cuts power at 11.8V, and the company notes that an older battery reaches that point sooner.

Features to look for

On Wiki Shopping, the most common listed features are night vision (180 of 225 dash cams), Wi-Fi (154) and parking mode (142). Browse dash cams with parking mode, with night vision or with Wi-Fi, or start from all dash cams.

How we count

Each dash cam is grouped by the camera setup and features its store listing states, from a read-only count of our listing pages on October 26, 2026. The other 72 state no camera setup. The counts change as listings come and go.
