Single DIN vs Double DIN Car Stereo Sizes
A single DIN car stereo has a 180 by 50 mm face and a double DIN is twice as tall at 180 by 100.3 mm; your dash opening and a fit guide tell you which fits.

The short answer
DIN is a size, not a brand or a feature. It comes from a German standard (DIN 75490) that the International Organization for Standardization adopted in 1984 as ISO 7736. The standard sets the panel size of a dash-mounted head unit:
| Size | Panel (mm) | Panel (inches, rounded) |
|---|---|---|
| Single DIN | 180 x 50 | 7.1 x 2.0 |
| Double DIN | 180 x 100.3 | 7.1 x 3.9 |
Both are the same width. A double DIN is twice as tall, which leaves room for a touch screen.
What is double DIN
A double DIN unit fills an opening about 4 inches tall. That extra height leaves room for a large touch screen. The ISO 7736 entry notes that newer units have been moving toward double DIN, driven by large touch screens and phone integration such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
A single DIN unit is the classic slim radio. It fits a 2 inch opening and usually has a small display and buttons. Some single DIN receivers carry a large screen that mounts on the front of the dash instead of inside the slot. On Wiki Shopping, several single DIN listings name a 6.5 to 7 inch screen, which is much taller than a 50 mm opening, so the screen sits outside it.
Single DIN vs double DIN
| Single DIN | Double DIN | |
|---|---|---|
| Panel width | 180 mm | 180 mm |
| Panel height | 50 mm (about 2 in) | 100.3 mm (about 4 in) |
| Room for a screen in the panel | Small display | Large touch screen |
Because the width is shared, the height decides the fit. A double DIN unit is too tall for a single DIN opening. A single DIN unit is shorter than a double DIN opening, so the leftover space has to be filled with a kit made for that car.
What size stereo fits my car
- Look at the factory radio. Measure the height of the faceplate or the opening behind it. About 2 inches points to single DIN; about 4 inches points to double DIN.
- Check a vehicle fit guide. Installation brands such as Metra sort their parts by year, make and model, so you can see what the dash takes.
- Plan for the install parts. Metra, for example, sells dash kits as radio installation kits listed by vehicle, and sells wire harnesses as a separate line.
- Check the depth. Receivers differ in chassis depth, so compare the listed depth with the space behind your dash.
How we count
The size is read from each car stereo listing's product name. Of the 76 car stereo receivers listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 18 name single DIN and 13 name double DIN. The other 45 do not name a size in the title, and they include portable screens and accessories such as microphones. Car audio sits in the automotive department, and counts change as listings are added or removed.
