Winch Capacity, Explained

Pick a winch rated for at least 1.5 times your vehicle's weight, and know that the rated pull applies only to the first layer of line on the drum.

The short answer

A winch's rating is the most it can pull, in pounds. The common rule is to choose one rated for at least 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle it is mounted on. A SuperWinch design engineer, interviewed on MotorWeek, puts the range at 1.5 to 2 times; Husar Winch, a winch maker, advises against going below 1.5.

2,000 lbs.3,000 lb winch4,000 lb winch
4,500 lbs.6,750 lb winch9,000 lb winch
6,000 lbs.9,000 lb winch12,000 lb winch

What size winch do I need

Start from your vehicle's weight, then multiply. Quadratec, a Jeep parts retailer, applies the 1.5 rule to the gross vehicle weight (the fully loaded rating, not the empty weight) and suggests 8,000 to 10,000 lb winches for a two-door Wrangler and 10,000 to 12,000 lb for a four-door Wrangler Unlimited. The MotorWeek engineer pairs his 4,500-pound Jeep with a winch of about 9,000 pounds or more.

Bigger is not always better. Quadratec warns that too much winch adds weight up front, more strain on the steering and suspension, and more load on the electrical system.

How much weight can a winch pull

The number on the box is the pull on the first layer of line, closest to the drum. Husar Winch explains why: each extra layer wound on the drum makes the radius larger, and the same motor torque then gives less pulling force. So a winch with most of its line still spooled pulls less than its rating.

Husar Winch adds that the maker states the pull for that first layer because that is where the most force is needed. So for a hard pull, unspooling more line brings the pull closer to the rating.

Synthetic rope vs steel cable winch

Synthetic ropeSteel cable
WeightLighterHeavier
If it breaksLess stored energy, less snap backCan whip back with force
AbrasionWears on rock edges; use the sleeveHolds up on rocks and sharp edges
CareCan degrade in UV light; keep it cleanCan rust, and breaks leave jagged ends; wear gloves
FairleadHawse (smooth opening)Roller

Quadratec calls synthetic rope the most popular choice for being light, easy to handle and safer if it fails. Steel stays the pick for rough, rocky ground. Either way, Quadratec says to drape a line dampener over the line during a pull, and to match the fairlead to the line: hawse for synthetic, roller for steel.

How we count

Each winch is grouped by the rated pull its store listing states, from a read-only count of our listing pages on October 26, 2026. Ratings with fewer listings are not in the chart, and the counts change as listings come and go.
