Rooftop Tents: Hard Shell vs Soft Shell

A hard shell rooftop tent can open in about a minute and handles bad weather better; a soft shell is lighter, cheaper and roomier but slower to pitch.

The short answer

  • Hard shell: a rigid case that pops up or opens like a clam. Fast to set up, sturdy in bad weather, and it costs more.
  • Soft shell: a fabric tent that folds out from a base on the roof. Lighter, cheaper and usually roomier, with room for an annex below, but slower to pitch and pack.

Whichever you pick, the tent plus its roof bars must fit inside your vehicle's roof load limit.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club adds that a hard shell can double as a roof storage box. Unsealed 4X4 notes that tent weights run from about 49 kg (108 lb) to more than 90 kg (198 lb), with the two types overlapping, so compare the weight of the exact models you are looking at.

Check your roof load first

Two limits matter:

  • Dynamic load: what the roof can carry while the vehicle moves. It is in the vehicle handbook, and the packed tent plus the roof rack or bars must stay under it. The Caravan and Motorhome Club says many cars have a 75 kg (165 lb) or 100 kg (220 lb) roof limit, and smaller cars may have less.
  • Static load: what the roof can hold when the vehicle is parked and you are sleeping in the tent. Tent suppliers suggest it can be three to five times the dynamic limit, but most car makers do not publish a static figure and there is no standard test, so ask the tent supplier if unsure.

The crossbars must suit your roof rails or mounting points, and the club suggests setting them 80 cm to 1 meter (about 31 to 39 inches) apart. Unsealed 4X4 warns that factory racks often fall short, so a stronger aftermarket rack may be needed. Plan for help or a fitting service, since the tent has to be lifted onto the roof.

Which one fits you

  • Quick overnight stops and bad weather: a hard shell. On Wiki Shopping, 23 tents are listed as hard shell.
  • A tighter budget, a lower roof limit, or a family that needs an annex: a soft shell. 8 tents are listed as soft shell.
  • Sleeping capacity: 12 tents list 2 people and 13 list 3 people. For colder trips, 10 are listed as four-season or insulated.

How we count

The counts come from the 40 rooftop tents on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, read from each store listing. Tents that do not state a shell type or sleeping capacity are left out of those counts. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
