Tire Types and How Long Tires Last
All-season tires suit mild climates, all-weather tires carry the snowflake mark for real winters, and a tire is worn out at 2/32 inch of tread or 10 years old.

The short answer
Tires are built for the weather they will meet. Michelin's tire guides sort the main road types this way:
| Type | Sidewall mark | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | No snow rating given | Hot pavement and rain-slick roads |
| All-season | M+S (mud and snow) | Mild climates all year |
| All-weather | 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake) | All year where winters are real |
| Winter | 3PMSF | Ice, packed snow and long spells below 45°F |
Trucks and off-road vehicles add tread types of their own, such as all-terrain and mud-terrain.
All-season vs all-weather tires
The difference is the snowflake. Michelin explains that all-season tires carry M+S but are not certified for severe snow, because their rubber stiffens in the cold. All-weather tires carry the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, which means they passed a standard severe snow traction test, and their rubber stays flexible in cold weather.
So the choice comes down to climate:
- Mild winters: all-season tires are made for this.
- Regular snow, one set all year: all-weather tires.
- Long, hard winters: dedicated winter tires, also 3PMSF rated, swapped off in spring.
Michelin suggests fitting winter tires in early autumn, before temperatures settle near 45°F.
How long do tires last
Tires wear out by tread depth or by age, whichever comes first.
- Tread: Michelin gives the US federal minimum as 2/32 inch. Wear bars molded into the grooves sit at that depth; when the tread is flush with them, the tire must be replaced. In the penny test, if you can see the top of Lincoln's head with the coin upside down in a groove, the tread is at or below 2/32 inch.
- Wet roads: Michelin notes that wet braking starts to fall off noticeably at 4/32 inch, so drivers who often face heavy rain may want to replace at that point.
- Age: Rubber ages even when the tread looks fine. Michelin recommends a close inspection after five years and replacement by ten years from the manufacture date. The last four digits of the DOT code give the week and year, so 2524 means the 25th week of 2024.
Michelin also advises rotating tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles and checking pressure monthly, which helps the tread wear evenly.
What run-flat means
A run-flat tire has reinforced sidewalls that hold up the car after it loses air, so you can keep driving at reduced speed for a limited distance, usually far enough to reach a tire shop. Michelin notes that speed and distance limits differ by tire, that most cars with run-flats also have a tire pressure monitor, and that a run-flat driven with little or no air should be taken off the wheel and inspected, even if it looks fine.
