Grow Light Watts, Spectrum and PAR Explained

Watts only show what a grow light draws; plants use light from 400 to 700 nanometers, measured as PPFD, and leafy greens need far less than fruiting plants.

The short answer

A grow light's wattage is how much electricity it uses, not how much light your plants get. Two lights with the same watts can deliver very different amounts of usable light. Look instead for the light output in the plant range, quoted as PPFD, and match it to what your plants need: leafy greens need much less light than tomatoes or peppers.

What does PAR mean in grow lights?

PAR stands for photosynthetically active radiation: light from 400 to 700 nanometers, the band plants can use for photosynthesis. It is roughly the same range the human eye sees. Because photosynthesis depends on the number of photons rather than their energy, plant scientists count photons:

TermWhat it measuresUnit
PPFDPhotons in the 400 to 700 nm band reaching a surface each secondμmol per square meter per second
DLI (daily light integral)Total photons a surface gets in a daymol per square meter per day

Wikipedia's grow light article gives the conversion when the light is steady: DLI equals 0.0036 times PPFD times the hours the light is on. Lumens and lux, the numbers on household bulbs, are weighted to human vision, which is why plant researchers prefer PPFD.

How many watts grow light do I need?

Work back from the plant. The grow light article lists typical daily needs:

PlantsDLI needed (mol per square meter per day)
Lettuce, spinach, kale12 to 17
Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers20 to 30

Using the formula, a light giving a steady PPFD of 300 for 16 hours a day delivers about 17 mol, the top of the range for leafy greens. Fruiting crops need more intensity, more hours, or both. Check the maker's PPFD figure at a stated hanging height; watts alone cannot tell you this.

Higher wattage lights also need more room above the plants. Wikipedia advises keeping LED grow lights about 12 inches away for lamps under 300 watts, up to 36 inches for lamps of 1,000 watts or more, to avoid burning leaves.

On Wiki Shopping, 15 grow lights are listed at 200 watts or more, while 8 list a draw of 10 watts per light.

Full spectrum vs LED grow light

The two terms overlap: an LED grow light can be full spectrum or not, so the real question is which spectrum it emits.

  • Red and blue LEDs give the pink or purple glow. Many plants grow normally under red and blue alone, and it is the most cost efficient mix, but studies cited by Wikipedia found growth is still better with green light added.
  • White, full spectrum LEDs mix red, blue and green to mimic daylight, so plants look natural under them. Cooler color temperatures give more blue, warmer ones more red.

Wikipedia notes that blue light tends to favor leafy, vegetative growth and red light flowering, but there is not yet enough research to recommend exact color ratios for LEDs.

Of the 105 grow lights listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 47 have a built-in timer and 41 are dimmable. By style, 24 are bulbs, 10 clip-on or gooseneck lights, 10 strips or tubes, 8 bars and 7 stand lights.

How we count

Light type, features and power draw are read from each grow light's store listing. Lights that do not state them are left out of those counts. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
