Jeans Sizes and Fits, Explained

The short answer

Jeans carry two kinds of size information. The numbers give the waist and the length, and the fit name says how the jeans are cut through the hip, thigh and leg. You need both to find a pair that fits.

On Wiki Shopping, 698 of the 844 jeans listed on October 26, 2026 state a fit. Straight is the most common (149 pairs), followed by wide leg (139) and relaxed (133).

What does 32x30 mean?

In waist and length sizing, often written W32 L30 or 32x30, the first number is the waist and the second is the inseam (the inside leg length), both in inches. A 32x30 pair is made for a 32-inch waist and a 30-inch inseam.

Many women's jeans use a single size number instead, often with a separate length such as petite, regular or long. Those numbers are each brand's own scale, so a size on one label does not convert directly to inches on another. Read the size chart of the brand you are buying.

How to measure yourself

Levi's size guide asks for four measurements taken on the body with a tape:

• Waist: around the smallest part of your waist.
• Seat: around the fullest part of your hips.
• Thigh: around the fullest part of your thigh.
• Inseam: straight down the inside of the leg, from the crotch to the ankle.

Levi's says that when your measurements point to different sizes, the hip measurement should decide. Between two sizes, it suggests the smaller one for a tighter fit and the larger one for a looser fit.

Slim vs skinny, and the other fits

Fit names are not standardized, so each brand draws its own lines. In general use:

• Skinny stays close to the leg from the hip all the way to the ankle.
• Slim is narrow through the seat and thigh but leaves a little more room in the leg than skinny.
• Straight keeps about the same width from the knee down.
• Tapered has room at the top and narrows toward the ankle.
• Relaxed gives more room through the seat and thigh.
• Bootcut and flare widen below the knee.
• Wide leg is loose from the hip down.

Slim is mostly a men's label here (62 of 89), while wide leg is mostly a women's one (106 of 139). Some listings name no gender, so the two gender columns do not always add up to the total. You can also browse men's jeans or stretch jeans.

Each pair of jeans on Wiki Shopping has its fit and gender read from the store listing. Jeans whose listing names no fit (146 pairs) are left out of the fit counts. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
