What Size Office Chair Do You Need?
A chair fits when your feet rest flat, the seat clears your knees and the weight limit covers you; 300 to 349 lb is the most common range we list.

The short answer
An office chair fits you when three things line up: the seat height lets your feet rest flat, the seat depth supports your thighs without pressing into the back of your knees, and the seller's stated weight limit covers your weight with room to spare. Check those three points against the listing and the adjustments it offers.
Seat height and depth
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) gives a simple test in its computer workstation guide: the height is right when the whole sole of your foot rests on the floor and the back of your knee sits slightly higher than the seat. If the seat cannot go low enough for your desk, OSHA suggests a footrest instead.
For depth, OSHA says the seat should hold most of your thigh without touching the back of your knee. A depth-adjustable seat lets shorter people sit back against the backrest and taller people keep their thighs supported. OSHA also lists a lumbar support that adjusts in height and a backrest that reclines at least 15 degrees from vertical.
Office chair weight capacity
The weight limit is the seller's own figure. Of the 1,514 chairs on Wiki Shopping, 691 give one, from our listing data on October 26, 2026:
| Stated weight limit | Chairs |
|---|---|
| Under 250 lb | 47 |
| 250 to 299 lb | 124 |
| 300 to 349 lb | 271 |
| 350 to 399 lb | 91 |
| 400 to 499 lb | 101 |
| 500 lb and up | 57 |
Chairs that state 400 lb or more appear on the big and tall chairs page. There is also an industry test standard for this group: Micom, a furniture testing lab, describes ANSI/BIFMA X5.11 for large occupant office chairs, released January 5, 2015, as using higher test loads than the general office chair standard X5.1. Its swivel test, for example, loads the seat with 400 lb instead of 250 lb. The lab notes that X5.11 is not a bariatric standard. A listing that names a test standard tells you more than a bare number, so look for it.
Gaming chair vs office chair
The labels describe a look more than a size. The gaming style takes after a racing seat, while office chairs range from simple mesh task chairs to padded executive models. By the style their listings state:
Whichever style you pick, check the same fit points: seat height range, seat depth, lumbar support and weight limit. Filters for adjustable lumbar support and chairs that recline help narrow either list.
How we count
Each chair on Wiki Shopping has its style and weight limit read from the store listing. A chair has at most one style; chairs whose listing gives no weight limit are left out of the weight table. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
