Refrigerator Sizes and Styles, Explained

Refrigerator size is the inside volume in cubic feet; a common rule is 4 to 6 cubic feet per adult, and the door style decides how that space is laid out.

The short answer

A refrigerator's size is its storage volume in cubic feet (cu ft), counting the fresh food and freezer sections together. Pick the volume from your household and shopping habits, then pick the door style, then check that the outside dimensions fit your kitchen.

What size refrigerator do I need

Sharp's sizing guide gives a general rule of at least 4 to 6 cubic feet per adult in the home. It also suggests 22 to 25 cubic feet for a medium-sized family and 26 cubic feet or more for a large family or a home that hosts guests often.

Not every maker counts the same way. Liebherr's buying guide uses a much lower figure, about 2 to 2.5 cubic feet per person in a shared home, and adds that someone who lives alone and shops once a week may want more room than that rule gives. Treat any rule as a starting point and adjust it for how you shop.

How many cubic feet for a family of 4

With Sharp's rule, two adults alone call for 8 to 12 cubic feet, and children, bulk shopping and a habit of cooking at home push the need up from there. Sharp's range for a medium family, 22 to 25 cubic feet, is a sensible target for a family of four buying a full-size fridge. A household that shops several times a week can go smaller.

French door vs side by side refrigerator

Bottom freezerFresh food on top, one freezer drawer or door below

A French door model puts the fresh food at eye level with full-width shelves, so wide trays and platters fit, but you bend down to reach the freezer drawer. A side-by-side keeps both frozen and fresh food at eye level, but each column is narrower, so large dishes are harder to fit.

On Wiki Shopping, French door is the most listed style with 48 models, against 9 side-by-side models.

Measure before you buy

Measure the width, height and depth of the space, and leave room for air around the cabinet and for the doors to open fully, as Sharp's guide advises. Also measure doorways and hallways on the way to the kitchen. A counter-depth model sits closer to flush with the cabinets; 33 refrigerators on Wiki Shopping list that feature, and 35 are 36 inches wide or more.

How we count

Capacity, door style, width and features are read from each refrigerator's store listing. Refrigerators that do not state them are left out of those counts. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
