Spray Paint Finishes, Dry Times and Primer
Gloss reflects the most light, satin sits in the middle and matte the least; most spray paint is dry to the touch in about 20 minutes, handled in an hour.

The short answer
A spray paint's finish (also called sheen) is how much light the dry paint reflects. The usual steps, from the most shine to the least, are gloss, semi-gloss, satin, matte and flat. Color and finish are separate choices, so the same color often comes in several sheens.
Krylon's FAQ gives a rule of thumb for drying: most of its spray paints are dry to the touch in 20 to 25 minutes and ready to handle in 1 hour. The label on the can has the exact times for that paint.
Matte vs satin vs gloss spray paint
| Finish | Look |
|---|---|
| Gloss | Shiny, close to mirror-like |
| Semi-gloss | Clear shine, a step down from gloss |
| Satin | Soft sheen |
| Matte | Very little shine |
| Flat | No shine |
Because gloss reflects more light, it tends to make dents and scratches easier to see, so surface prep shows more. Matte and flat tend to hide small flaws.
As an example of a range, Krylon lists its Fusion All-In-One in gloss, satin, matte and flat, with flat only in black and white.
How long does spray paint take to dry
Krylon's figures for its spray paints:
| Product | Dry to touch | Handle |
|---|---|---|
| Most Krylon spray paints | 20 to 25 minutes | 1 hour |
| Fusion All-In-One | About 20 minutes | 1 hour |
| Rust Tough primer | 20 minutes | Not stated |
For Fusion All-In-One, COLORmaxx and Rust Tough, Krylon says to wait about 1 minute between coats. Other paints need their full recoat time from the label.
Weather changes these numbers. Krylon suggests spraying between 55 and 75 degrees F with humidity under 60 percent. High humidity slows drying and can lead to lifting or peeling, and cooler air makes drying and curing take longer.
Does spray paint need primer
It depends on the paint and the surface. Krylon's FAQ says a primer seals bare metal, wood, canvas and similar materials, and lists what it adds: a smoother base, better adhesion, truer color, rust resistance on bare metal and even absorption on bare wood.
Paint and primer in one (sometimes sold as all-in-one) skips that step. Krylon says its Fusion All-In-One needs no sanding or priming and lists metal, wood, plastic, laminate, glass, concrete and more as surfaces. On glass, the FAQ notes that primer makes the glass opaque.
How to get an even coat
Krylon's spray painting guide suggests:
- Remove loose paint and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper, wipe with a damp rag and let it dry.
- Lightly sand glossy areas to dull them.
- Spray several thin coats instead of one heavy one.
- Start and stop each pass off the object, and overlap passes by about one third.
How we count
Brand is read from each spray paint listing. Of the 74 spray paints listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 42 are Rust-Oleum and 10 are Krylon. Spray paint sits in the arts, crafts and sewing department, and counts change as listings are added or removed.
