Water Softener Sizing and Grain Capacity

Size a water softener by multiplying people by daily water use per person and hardness in grains per gallon, then pick a capacity that lasts several days.

The short answer

A softener's size is its grain capacity: how many grains of hardness it can remove before it has to regenerate. To find what you need:

  1. Find your water hardness in grains per gallon (gpg).
  2. Multiply people in the home by gallons used per person per day, then by the hardness.
  3. Choose a capacity that covers several days of that load.

Step 1: know your hardness

Hardness comes mostly from calcium and magnesium. The Water Quality Association (WQA) measures it in grains per gallon, and its glossary gives the conversion: one grain per gallon equals 17.1 milligrams per liter, the same as 17.1 parts per million. Water reports often list hardness in mg/L or ppm, so divide by 17.1 to get gpg.

The WQA calls water with less than 1 gpg of hardness soft and anything at 1 gpg or more hard. A water test kit or your utility's annual water quality report will give you the number.

Your report saysDivide byResult
171 mg/L17.110 gpg
342 ppm17.120 gpg

Step 2: work out the daily load

Culligan's sizing method is a simple multiplication: people times gallons per person per day times hardness in gpg gives the grains to remove each day. Culligan uses 80 gallons per person per day as an average and suggests 50 to 75 gallons if you have no water bill to check. Your bill is the better number when you have it.

Culligan's own example: five people using 80 gallons each is 400 gallons a day; at 10 gpg that is 4,000 grains a day.

Step 3: pick a capacity

Divide a softener's grain capacity by your daily grains to see how many days it runs between regenerations. Culligan calls 32,000 grains, about one cubic foot of resin, a typical home capacity and fits it to a family of five. In the example above, 32,000 divided by 4,000 is 8 days.

Culligan warns about both extremes:

  • Too small: it regenerates more often, using more salt and water.
  • Too large: it costs more up front and may not work efficiently at low flow, possibly using more salt than needed.

How regeneration works

During regeneration, a salt solution washes the resin and restores its ability to soften, the WQA explains. A metered (demand initiated) softener starts regeneration after a set volume of water has passed, while a time clock model regenerates on a schedule. Metering matches regeneration to what you actually use. On Wiki Shopping, 14 softeners list metered regeneration.

Salt-based vs salt-free

A salt-based softener uses ion exchange: sodium on the resin beads swaps places with calcium and magnesium in the water, according to the WQA glossary. Salt-free systems work differently, so read what each maker says its system does to hardness before comparing it with a salt-based unit by grain capacity.

How we count

System types and features are read from each softener's store listing on October 27, 2026, out of 62 water softeners listed. Softeners of other types, or that do not state one, are left out of those counts. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
