Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Amazon's payment help pages and its Affirm page, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them and the terms shown at checkout before you borrow.

No layaway, four payment plans

Amazon's Payment Methods help page lists four plans under "Buy Now, Pay Over Time": Amazon Monthly Payments, credit card installments, Synchrony Pay Later and Pay Over Time with Affirm. Layaway is not among them.

Amazon Monthly Payments

This plan appears only where a product page or checkout shows a "Monthly Payments" option, and Amazon decides eligibility from your account, such as purchase history, not from a credit report. You pay a first (down) payment when the item ships, which also covers the full tax and shipping, then the rest every 30 days. You can prepay at any time. If a payment fails, Amazon can charge another card on file or, for Amazon devices, deregister the device. On a return, the unpaid balance is taken off the refund.

Credit card installments

Amazon names offers from Citi, Chase, U.S. Bank and its own Amazon Visa, Store Card and Secured Card, and says those three Amazon cards have 0% APR. The full amount is charged to the card when the order ships; only the monthly part is added to your minimum payment. Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, 1-Click and Subscribe & Save orders do not qualify.

Amazon's promotional financing page adds that special financing offers on the Prime Store Card and Prime Secured Card ended for new purchases in the week of February 16, 2026. Equal Monthly Payments is now the only promotional financing offer on those cards.

Synchrony Pay Later

This is an installment loan, with no card issued and a decision at checkout. Amazon says an order under $3,000 will not affect your credit score, while one of $3,000 or more may. The first payment is due 30 to 33 days after everything ships, there is no penalty for paying early and no late fees.

Affirm

Affirm needs a cart of at least $50 of eligible items and a US mobile number. Checking eligibility is a soft inquiry, but your plan and payments are reported to credit bureaus. Amazon's example is a $300 purchase split into 12 payments of $27.79 at 20% APR. A down payment may be required, up to half the total. Affirm does not cover gift cards, digital items, grocery orders, Subscribe & Save.

Returns

Returns follow the normal Amazon return policy for every plan. Start the return with Amazon, not with the lender.
