Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Target's Financing and Accepted payment options help pages, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you choose a plan.

Does Target do layaway?

Target's payment help pages do not describe a layaway program, where the store holds an item while you pay it off. What they do list is financing: you take the item now and pay for it over time through a third-party lender or pay-later service.

The pay-over-time options Target lists

Target's accepted payment page names these installment services for Target.com and the Target app:

  • Affirm
  • Sezzle
  • PayPal Pay in 4
  • Afterpay
  • Klarna
  • Zip

Target's financing page gives details for two of them, Affirm and PayPal Pay in 4.

AffirmPayPal Pay in 4
Order sizeFrom $50$10 to $2,000, tax included
PaymentsMonthly, over 3, 6, 12 or 18 months4 payments over 6 weeks
Interest10% to 36% APR, simple interestNot stated on Target's page
Credit checkYes, plus approvalNot stated on Target's page

Target's page states the Affirm upper limit two ways in different answers ($15,000 and $25,000, tax included), so check the amount at checkout. Affirm may ask for a down payment, and orders under $100 get fewer plan choices. Target says Affirm charges no late fees, service fees or prepayment fees.

Using Affirm online and in stores

Online, you pick Affirm at checkout, finish a short loan application on Affirm's site and get a decision right away. Payments then go to Affirm, on its website or app, not to Target.

In stores, Target says you can apply in the Affirm app, then add the Affirm virtual card to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay and tap to pay. A physical Affirm Card also works at the register.

What you cannot finance with Affirm

Target lists a long set of items Affirm cannot pay for, including alcohol, vitamins and supplements, many health and hygiene products, pet food and pet health items, contract phones, protection plans and specialty gift cards. Same Day Delivery orders and pre-orders are also excluded. Your whole cart must be eligible to use Affirm.

PayPal Pay in 4 is not offered to residents of Missouri or Nevada, according to Target, and PayPal does not work for items sold by Target Plus partners.

Returns on a financed order

If you return an item bought with Affirm, Target says the refund lands on your loan balance within 3 to 10 business days. Keep making any payments that come due in the meantime. A partial refund may shorten the loan or lower the last payment rather than cut the next one. If an order is canceled, the loan is refunded, but interest already paid is not.

Target Circle Card

Target also issues its own Target Circle Card in debit, credit and Mastercard versions, which Target accepts in stores and online. Card terms are set by Target's card program, so check Target's Circle Card page for rates before applying.
