Walmart Gift Cards, Explained
Walmart gift cards work in Walmart stores, at Sam's Club and online at Walmart.com, cannot be returned, and are how Walmart pays most store credit.

Where you can use a Walmart gift card
Walmart says a physical gift card with a PIN works in any Walmart store in the United States or Puerto Rico, including areas inside the store that Walmart manages. The same card also works at Sam's Club stores.

Can you use a Walmart gift card online?
Yes. The Ask Walmart page lists Walmart.com as a place to spend it, and samsclub.com for Sam's Club members. The return policy says the same thing about the gift cards it issues as store credit: they can pay in a physical store or on Walmart.com.
The design on the front does not matter. Walmart says the picture is only decoration and puts no limit on what the money buys.
Checking your balance
Walmart's corporate pages do not describe how to check a balance; that is in the gift card terms on Walmart.com. Our general guide to gift card balances and fees covers what to look for in any store's terms.
Gift cards and returns
Gift cards show up in Walmart's return policy in three ways.
You cannot return one. Gift cards, prepaid phone cards, prepaid gaming cards and SIM cards are on Walmart's final sale list.
Refunds often come back as one. If you paid with a Walmart gift card, the refund goes back to a gift card or to your Walmart Balance, and Walmart says those funds can take up to 3 hours to appear. When a refund cannot go back to the original debit or credit card, store purchases get a gift card or Walmart Balance instead.
Returns without a receipt end on one. You show a valid government-issued photo ID, Walmart runs its refund verification check, and an approved refund is issued on a Walmart gift card. Gift returns without a gift receipt also come back as an exchange or a gift card.

Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance?
Walmart describes its gift card as store credit you can spend in stores or online. Walmart Balance is an amount stored in your Walmart account that you can spend at Walmart. Both show up as refund options above.
Coupons and gift cards
Walmart's coupon policy forbids using a manufacturer coupon to buy prepaid products or gift cards.
