Walmart Exchange Policy, Explained

Walmart exchanges most items within 90 days; without a receipt you need a photo ID, and some opened items can only be swapped, not refunded.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the Return Policy on Walmart's Policies and Guidelines page, which Walmart dated October 9, 2026 and which we read on October 26, 2026. The official page is the one that applies; check it before you go to the store.

The basic window

Walmart treats exchanges and returns under the same rule: you have 90 days from purchase or delivery, unless the item falls under one of its exceptions. It covers Walmart U.S. stores, Walmart.com and Walmart Business. Items from Marketplace sellers on Walmart.com can follow the seller's own policy.

Shorter windows apply to some categories:

ItemWindow
Major appliances2 days (30 days if still factory sealed)
Most wireless phones14 days
Consumer electronics, PCs and PC parts, vacuums, heaters and fans30 days
Contact lenses, prescription glasses, hearing aids60 days
Most other items90 days
Perennials, shrubs and trees (in store only)365 days

Can you exchange without a receipt?

Yes, within limits. Walmart can try to find a store purchase from the debit or credit card you used, or an online order from your phone number or email. With no receipt at all, you must show a valid government-issued photo ID, and Walmart runs the request through its refund verification check. If it passes, the value goes on a Walmart gift card, and Walmart caps how many receipt-free returns one person can make and how often.

Gift exchanges

With a gift receipt, you can exchange the item, take a Walmart gift card, or have the refund go back to the buyer's original payment. Without a gift receipt, the choice is an exchange or a Walmart gift card.

Items you can only exchange

Some products, once opened or used, can only be swapped for the same or a similar item:

ItemExchange-only window
Unlocked phones, opened14 days
Drones and projectors30 days
Air beds and air mattresses90 days
Power generators90 days
Durable medical equipment, such as crutches and walkers90 days

New, unopened items in these groups still qualify for a full refund.

Items you cannot exchange

Walmart lists final sale items that it will not replace or refund, among them firearms and ammunition, prescription medications, opened or unopened trading cards, alcohol, tobacco, gift cards and prepaid cards, and downloadable games and software. Used or mounted tires are on the list too.

Practical points

  • Furniture and grills that need assembly must be taken apart before you bring them back to a store.
  • Freight and oversized items cannot go back to a store.
  • Wipe personal data from phones, tablets and laptops first.
  • Items bought as part of an electronics bundle must all come back together.
  • Unmounted new tires go back only to a store with an Auto Care Center.

The store manager has the final word on any eligible item. For the dates that apply to fall shopping, see our Walmart holiday return policy page.
