Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the Return Policy on Walmart's Policies and Guidelines page, which Walmart dated October 9, 2026 and which we read on October 26, 2026. The official page is the one that applies; check it before you buy gifts.

The holiday window

Walmart calls it Extended Holiday Returns. Most items bought between October 1 and December 31 can be returned until January 31. The page does not print a year next to these dates, so read them as the current season: purchases from October 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, returnable until January 31, 2027.

For an item with the standard 90-day window, the extension matters most for October buys. Something bought in late December already has 90 days, which reaches past January 31, so the regular rule is the later date there.

What the extension leaves out

Walmart names these exceptions, and adds that there may be others:

  • Wireless phones
  • Protection plans
  • Major appliances
  • Dyson products
  • Select seasonal and luxury goods

For those, the normal windows apply. Walmart lists most wireless phones at 14 days, consumer electronics and PCs at 30 days, and major appliances at 2 days after delivery, or 30 days if the appliance is still in its factory-sealed packaging.

Gifts

Holiday returns are often gifts. With a gift receipt, the recipient can exchange the item, take a Walmart gift card, or have the money go back to the buyer's original payment. Without a gift receipt, the options are an exchange or a Walmart gift card. Returns with no receipt at all need a valid government-issued photo ID and pass through Walmart's refund verification check, and an approved refund comes as a Walmart gift card.

Ways to return

You can start a return in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com, then bring the item to a store, use curbside, send it back free by mail or book a FedEx pickup. Walmart+ members get extra home pickup options. Some items cannot go to a store at all: freight and oversized items, and major appliances, which are returned through the app or website for a carrier pickup.

Before you return

  • Take furniture and grills apart first; assembled items are not accepted in store.
  • Keep all parts of an electronics bundle together.
  • Erase personal data from phones, tablets and laptops.
  • Marketplace items sold by other sellers can follow the seller's own policy.

The store manager has the final say on eligible returns. For how other chains handle December purchases, see our holiday return windows overview.
