Walmart Return Policy, Explained
Walmart gives 90 days for most returns, with shorter windows for electronics, phones and appliances and a gift card for returns without a receipt.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the Walmart Return Policy published on Walmart's corporate Policies and Guidelines page (marked updated October 9, 2026), read on October 26, 2026. The official policy is the one that applies; check it before you return anything.
How long you have
Walmart gives 90 days after purchase or receipt for most items bought in Walmart U.S. stores, on Walmart.com or through Walmart Business. Bring the store receipt or the order number and the refund goes back to the original payment. Many categories have a shorter window:
| Item | Return window |
|---|---|
| Most items | 90 days |
| Major appliances (refrigerators, washers, ranges and similar) | 2 days after delivery |
| Most wireless phones | 14 days |
| Consumer electronics, PCs and PC parts, vacuums | 30 days |
| Heating and cooling, e-bikes, scooters, hoverboards | 30 days |
| Most Marketplace (third-party seller) items | 30 days |
| Contact lenses, prescription glasses, hearing aids | 60 days |
| Tires, lawn and garden equipment, photo products | 90 days |
| Perennials, shrubs and trees (in store only) | 365 days |
Unopened, factory-sealed major appliances can go back up to 30 days after delivery. Major appliance returns are not taken in stores; you start them in the app or at walmart.com/returns.
Electronics and phones
Electronics are the main exception to the 90-day rule. PCs and components must come back in their original packaging, and after 30 days the manufacturer's warranty is the route. Some opened items can only be exchanged: unlocked opened phones within 14 days, drones and projectors within 30 days. Downloadable software and video games cannot be returned, and items sold in a bundle must come back together. Wipe your personal data from phones, tablets and laptops first.
Holiday purchases
Most items bought from October 1 through December 31 can be returned until January 31. Walmart lists exceptions, such as wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products and some seasonal and luxury goods.
Returning without a receipt
Lost the receipt? Staff can try to find a store purchase from the debit or credit card you used, or an online order from your phone number or email. With no receipt at all, you need a valid government-issued photo ID, and an approved return is paid on a Walmart gift card. Walmart limits how many returns without a receipt one customer can make.
Items that cannot be returned
The final sale list includes firearms and ammunition, prescription medications, alcohol, tobacco, gift cards and prepaid cards, trading cards, used or mounted tires, pepper spray, gas-powered recreational vehicles and digital downloads.
How to return and get your money
- In store or curbside: start the return in the Walmart app or on Walmart.com to save time, then bring the item.
- By mail or pickup: returns by mail are free, or you can schedule a FedEx pickup.
- Marketplace items: the seller's own policy applies, and some sellers charge a restocking fee of up to 20%.
Refund timing depends on how you paid. Cash comes back right away, credit and debit cards take up to 7 days, and Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance refunds take up to 3 hours.
