Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Best Buy's Return and Exchange Policy page, read on October 24, 2026. The official page is the one that applies; check it before you return anything.

How long you have

Best Buy says the return period starts the day you receive the product. It applies to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned products.

Best Buy notes that Verizon devices that can be activated have a 30-day return period for everyone. The longer member windows do not apply to products from Marketplace sellers.

How to return an item

  1. Gather everything. Bring the item with its original contents and packaging. Best Buy says items must come back in like-new condition, and it may refuse or reduce a refund when parts or packaging are missing.
  2. Pick a store or ship it. Any Best Buy store takes back items sold by Best Buy, in store or online. To ship it, log in to your account, print the prepaid label from the order and drop the package at an authorized location within your return period.
  3. Bring proof of purchase. The packing slip or receipt and the card you paid with speed up a store return. Without proof of purchase, Best Buy says a refund may be store credit, limited or denied.

Some items cannot be shipped back, including major appliances, TVs over 50 inches and kegerators. For major appliances and other truck deliveries, Best Buy asks you to call 1-888-BEST BUY (1-888-237-8289) rather than the store.

Restocking fees

Activatable devices (not prepaid phones)$45

Best Buy says there is no restocking fee when the product is unopened, or when the purchase is made in Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma or South Carolina, or where the law prohibits it.

Items with different rules

  • Not returnable once bought: custom and personalized orders, items marked Final Sale, non-subscription digital content, codes and prepaid cards, trading cards, and products with batteries of 300 watt-hours or more, among others on the policy page.
  • Not returnable once opened: products that touch bodily fluids, LEGO products, SIM kits and consumables such as batteries, ink and filters, among others.
  • Holiday decorations: Halloween and Christmas decorations, 15 days for everyone, members included.
  • Longer window: litter boxes, 90 days; pet training devices and hearing aids, 60 days.

When the refund arrives

Best Buy refunds the way you paid in most cases. For returns by mail, it says the return is processed within 7 to 10 business days of arrival, and your bank may take up to 10 more days to show it. Cash payments over $800, and check or non-credit debit payments over $250, are refunded by check within 10 business days.
