AutoZone Return Policy, Explained

As reported by consumer sites, AutoZone takes most items back within 90 days at any store, in original packaging with a receipt; used parts may be refused.

AutoZone's own return policy page could not be read when this was written: the site refused automated visits. The rules below are as reported by SuperMoney (updated October 2026) and Rather-Be-Shopping (updated August 2025), which agree on the main points. Confirm the current policy with your AutoZone store or on autozone.com before you return anything.

The basics

Both sources describe a 90-day return window for most items. The item should be new and unused, in its original condition and packaging, with the receipt. Both also say a store may ask for a government-issued photo ID.

SituationAs reported

Online ordersBack to a store, or by mail
Used or installed partsMay be refused
Gift cards, customized itemsNot returnable
Final sale itemsNot returnable, per Rather-Be-Shopping

SuperMoney adds that special orders and tools may follow different periods, and that tools may have a 30-day window. Check the terms on your receipt for those.

Opened, used and installed parts

Rather-Be-Shopping says an opened item can still go back if it is unused and in new condition with its packaging, and that a defective item within its warranty can be returned even if it was opened. Both sources say AutoZone may deny a refund for a part that was used or installed on a vehicle. Since test-fitting a part may count as installing it, compare the new part with the old one before you bolt it on.

SuperMoney notes that parts should have their fluids drained before a return, and that hazardous materials call for contacting customer service first.

Car batteries

Rather-Be-Shopping says an unused battery can be returned within the 90 days with its packaging and receipt. A used battery that fails through no fault of the owner is handled as a warranty case: the source says it can be exchanged for a replacement at no charge rather than refunded.

Returning without a receipt

Both sources say receipt-free returns are not guaranteed. SuperMoney says they are at AutoZone's discretion, a refund or exchange may be based on the current selling price, and a photo ID may be required. Rather-Be-Shopping suggests having the purchase looked up through customer support or an AutoZone Rewards account, which keeps a purchase history.

Online orders

Both sources say items bought on autozone.com can go back to any store within the same window; SuperMoney says to bring the packing slip or digital receipt. For a mail return, SuperMoney says to start it on AutoZone's website, and Rather-Be-Shopping says to fill in the return form on the shipping invoice and pack it with the item. Both say return shipping is refunded only when AutoZone made a mistake or the item arrived defective.

Refunds

SuperMoney says refunds go to the original payment method or can be taken as an exchange, may take a few days to appear, and purchases paid with an AutoZone gift card are generally refunded to a gift card.
