Burlington Return Policy, Explained
Burlington asks for returns within 30 days with the receipt for a refund to your original payment; later or receiptless returns get merchandise credit instead.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Burlington's Return Policy, Layaway Policy and Gift Cards FAQ pages in its Help Center, read on October 27, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; ask at the register if your case is unusual.
The basic rule
Burlington says items should come back within 30 days of purchase, with the original receipt. The item has to be new: not used, not washed, and in its original packaging. A return that meets those terms is refunded to the payment you used.
What you get back
How you are paid depends on timing and on whether you have the receipt:
| Your return | What Burlington gives |
|---|---|
| With receipt, within 30 days | Refund to the original payment |
| With receipt, after 30 days | Merchandise credit, less service fees |
| No receipt, with photo ID | Merchandise credit at the lowest selling price |
| After 60 days | Merchandise credit at the lowest selling price |
| Layaway deposits, payments and layaway items | Merchandise credit, less service fees |
For receiptless returns, Burlington asks for a photo ID: a driver's license, a state non-driver ID, a passport or a military ID. "Lowest selling price" suggests the credit can be smaller than what you paid if the item was later marked down.
How original payment refunds work
Burlington spells out a few payment cases:
- Check: the refund goes back to the account the check came from.
- Debit card with a PIN: you get cash.
- Credit card plus a Burlington gift card: the credit card is refunded first, up to the full amount charged to it, and the rest comes as a Burlington merchandise credit card.
Verification and refusals
Every return goes through a third party verification process and needs system approval. Burlington says it may collect your ID details and return history into its processor's system where the law allows, and it keeps the right to limit or refuse any refund.
Layaway purchases
Layaway follows its own rules. Burlington refunds layaway only as merchandise credit, and asks for a valid photo ID for refunds. The service fee is non-refundable, and a layaway that is cancelled or not finished on time adds a further fee; the Layaway Policy page lists the amounts and the state exceptions for Maryland, Ohio and Rhode Island.
Before you go to the store
- Find the receipt and check the purchase date.
- Keep tags and the original packaging, and do not wash the item.
- Bring a photo ID, especially without a receipt.
- Expect store credit rather than cash if you are past 30 days.
