Dillard's Return Policy, Explained

Consumer sites report Dillard's takes most returns within 30 days with proof of purchase, charges 9.95 dollars for a mail label and excludes deep clearance.

The return policy page on the Dillard's website could not be read when we checked it on October 27, 2026: the site answered with an Access Denied page. The rules below are as reported by two consumer sites that agree with each other, SuperMoney (updated October 22, 2026) and the Elliott Report consumer advocacy site (updated August 10, 2025). They are not read on the Dillard's site, so confirm the terms with a Dillard's store or customer service before you return anything.

How long you have

Both sources give a 30-day return window for most items. Elliott adds that items should be unused and in their original condition, unless the problem is a manufacturer defect. SuperMoney notes that some categories, such as electronics and seasonal items, may have different windows, but it gives no figures, so ask before you buy those.

Proof of purchase

Dillard's works with a proof of purchase number, often called a POP number, for each item. Elliott says you find it on your receipt or on the yellow sticker attached at purchase. Keep both the receipt and the tag until you are sure you are keeping the item.

Without proof of purchase, SuperMoney reports that Dillard's may still take a return at its discretion, usually as store credit at the current selling price, and may ask for ID. That is not a promise; plan on needing the POP number.

What you cannot return

Both sources list the same three exclusions:

  • Clearance items marked down 65% or more
  • Sale items that carried an extra discount
  • Personalized merchandise

Returning in a store or by mail

SuperMoney says online orders can go back to any Dillard's store except Clearance Centers, and that you can also mail a return with your own trackable shipping service instead of the Dillard's label. Returning in a store is the way to avoid the $9.95 label charge.

SuperMoney also reports a $25 restocking fee on some products, shown at checkout when it applies. Check your order page for that note before you count on a full refund.

How refunds are paid

Both sources say refunds go back to the original payment method; SuperMoney adds that merchandise credit is the other possible form, and that purchases paid with a gift card are refunded to a gift card. Elliott says the refund includes the sales tax, and that purchases paid by check carry a 10-day wait before a refund.

Quick checklist

  1. Return within 30 days of purchase.
  2. Bring the receipt or keep the yellow POP sticker.
  3. Keep items unused and in original condition.
  4. Check whether the item was deep clearance, extra-discounted or personalized.
  5. Go to a store if you want to skip the $9.95 mail fee.
