Target takes back most unopened items within 90 days, owned brands for up to a year with a receipt, and electronics within 30 days or 14 for Apple.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Target's Returns help pages, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you return anything.
How long you have
Target says most unopened items in new condition can be refunded or exchanged within 90 days. For Target.com orders, the clock starts when the order is invoiced: when any part ships, arrives with a Shipt shopper or is ready for pickup.
| Item | Return window |
|---|---|
| Most items sold by Target | 90 days |
| Target Owned Brands, with a receipt | Up to one year |
| Electronics and entertainment (not Apple or Beats) | 30 days |
| Apple and Beats products, mobile phones included | 14 days |
| Most Target Plus Partner items | 30 days, refund only |
Target Circle Card holders and Target Circle 360 members get an extra 30 days on nearly everything bought with the card. That extra time does not apply to Target Owned Brands. Opened beauty products bought with the card can go back within 120 days, against 90 days otherwise.
Electronics and phones
Electronics have the shortest windows. Opened music, movies, video games and software can only be exchanged for the same title. For phones, carrier early termination fees may apply, contract phones must go back in store to a Target Tech Rep, and Target says a restocking charge of up to $35 may apply unless the phone is unopened.
Holiday purchases
Target's holiday page covers purchases from November 1 through December 24, 2026. For those, the return clock starts on December 26, 2026:
| Holiday purchase | Return by |
|---|---|
| Electronics and entertainment (not Apple or Beats) | January 24, 2027 |
| Apple and Beats, unlocked or prepaid phones | January 8, 2027 |
| Most Target Plus items (not seasonal decor) | January 24, 2027 |
Returning without a receipt
Target says returns without a receipt may be limited, and opened or damaged items may be refused. Staff can look up purchases made with a Target Circle Card or a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card. With no proof of purchase at all, you may get a merchandise return card, and Target asks for a government-issued ID. That card does not expire, works only in Target stores for goods or services, cannot be used online or turned into cash, and only one can be used per transaction.
Items that cannot be returned
Target lists as final sale: trading cards and their accessories, open or defective collectibles, personalized items, digital downloads, opened breast pumps, specialty and prepaid gift cards and some Target Plus items. Target Optical, Pharmacy, Starbucks and Target Tech items go back to those counters.
How to return and get your money
- In store: take the item to Guest Services with the receipt, the return barcode from the Target app or Target.com, or the card you paid with.
- By mail: start the return online and print the free prepaid label. Target.com orders can also go back to any store.
- Large items: Target may pick up some heavy items, usually over 150 pounds; call 1-800-591-3869 to check.
Refunds go back to the original payment in most cases. Target says a Target Circle Card refund typically shows within 2 days of approval, other credit cards within 5 days, and mail returns about 7 to 10 business days after the return center receives the item. Gift receipt returns come back as a Target GiftCard.
