Payment programs change. Walmart's own help pages did not load for us (walmart.com showed a robot check), so the layaway history below is as reported by news outlets, and the financing terms come from the OnePay Later page of OnePay, the payments company Walmart majority owns, read on October 26, 2026. Check the terms shown at checkout before you sign up.
Does Walmart do layaway?
No. In September 2021, news reports said Walmart would not offer layaway that holiday season. Walmart had already dropped seasonal layaway in some stores the year before, and in 2021 it ended the program in all stores. The old program ran from late August to mid-December. A Walmart spokesperson said at the time that customers' needs and shopping habits had changed and that its other payment options were the right fit.
With layaway, you paid in parts and took the item home at the end. With the financing that replaced it, you take the item home right away and pay afterward, with interest on most plans.
From Affirm to Klarna
When layaway ended, Walmart pointed shoppers to buy now, pay later loans from Affirm. In March 2025, Talk Business and PYMNTS reported that Klarna would become the exclusive provider of installment loans at Walmart in the U.S., offered through OnePay, which Talk Business describes as Walmart's majority-owned fintech. OnePay runs the app side and Klarna makes the lending decisions. Talk Business reported that Walmart would part ways with Affirm by the end of 2025, while PYMNTS cited an Affirm filing saying the partnership remained in place. The two reports do not agree, so check the payment options shown at Walmart checkout for what is offered today.

What you cannot finance
OnePay lists groceries, alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, pharmacy products, personal care, pet consumables and money services as not eligible, and says the list is not complete and can change.
Who can apply
The page asks that you be a U.S. resident with a U.S. address, at least 18, with a valid Social Security number, a debit card or bank account, and a phone that can receive text codes. OnePay notes Klarna shares loan and payment data with TransUnion.
Before you finance
- Check the APR. At up to 35.99%, a long plan can add a lot to the price; a short 0% plan, when offered, costs nothing extra if paid on time.
- Count the payments. A missed payment can bring a late fee, and interest may keep building.
- Compare. Target and other stores offer their own plans; see our guide to Target financing.
