What Amazon accepts

Amazon's Accepted Payment Methods page lists these for Amazon.com orders:

Payment methodNotes
Visa, including Prime Visa and Amazon VisaCredit or debit
Mastercard, Discover, American ExpressCredit or debit
Amazon Store Card and Amazon Secured CardThe CVV is required on every Store Card purchase
Prepaid Visa, Mastercard or American Express cardsPrepaid credit and gift cards from those networks
Checking accountPersonal, ACH-enabled, at a US branch
Amazon Gift CardsCan be combined with one card
EBT (SNAP and cash)Eligible items only
FSA and HSAEligible items, US billing addresses only
OTC Benefits cardOTC Network cards only, eligible items

PayPal is not on that list. You can add or change cards in your Amazon Wallet without placing an order.

Splitting a payment

Amazon lets you split an order between an Amazon Gift Card balance and one credit or debit card. It does not let you split one order across several credit or debit cards.

Paying from a checking account

If you have no credit card, Amazon accepts an ACH-enabled US checking account. At checkout, choose to add a checking account and enter the routing number, the account number, the account holder's name and address, and that person's US driver's license or state ID number. Savings accounts are not accepted, and business bank accounts work only for Amazon Business accounts. If you are not sure your account is ACH-enabled, your bank can tell you.

EBT, FSA, HSA and OTC cards

Amazon accepts SNAP and TANF (cash) EBT cards, and you can register one EBT card at a time. SNAP items must be sold and shipped by Amazon.com or Amazon Fresh and follow the same rules as in stores; a cash EBT card works on most categories, third-party sellers included. People who receive assistance may also qualify for discounted Prime; see Amazon Prime Access.

FSA and HSA cards pay for eligible items only. With an OTC Benefits card, you also need a default payment method on the order: Amazon charges it for anything the OTC card does not cover.

Paying with card reward points

Shop with Points lets you spend rewards from participating credit card and loyalty programs at checkout, Prime membership included. Amazon says there is no fee. A few rules:

  • Points come off your balance when you place the order, not when it ships.
  • If you cancel before shipping, Amazon says the points come back automatically within 48 hours.
  • Changing an order before it ships, updating the card's expiration date or changing the shipping address removes points as a payment method.
  • On a partial refund, Amazon refunds the other payment methods before the points.
  • Prime Visa and Amazon Visa rewards arrive 24 to 72 hours after an eligible purchase and can then be used right away.

Paying over time

Amazon's payment help also lists Amazon Monthly Payments, credit card installments, Synchrony Pay Later and Affirm. Our guide to Amazon financing covers how each works.
