Walmart Payment Methods, Explained

Walmart takes cards, EBT, PayPal, Pay by Bank and gift cards, adds Apple Pay through Tap to Pay in stores, and offers OnePay Later rather than Afterpay.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Walmart's help pages on payment methods, Tap to Pay and SNAP EBT, and its OnePay Later page, all read on walmart.com on October 26, 2026. Those pages are the ones that apply.

What Walmart accepts

Walmart's Payment Methods help page lists these:

Payment methodNotes from Walmart
Credit and debit cardsListed as accepted
EBT cardsFrom participating states, for eligible items
Pay by BankPay straight from a linked bank account
Walmart gift cardsCannot be used to buy another gift card
Walmart Balance and Walmart CashWalmart Cash works in stores and online
HSA and FSA cardsFor eligible items; enter as a credit card
Benefit cardsFor eligible items, including Healthy Benefits and OTC Network
PayPalListed as accepted

Walmart adds that some methods may not work on orders shipped abroad. In stores, its Tap to Pay page also names cash, checks and Walmart Pay, the app based way to pay at the register.

Does Walmart take Apple Pay?

In stores, yes, as Walmart rolls out Tap to Pay. The Tap to Pay page says the option started at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations, with plans to reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and fuel stations by mid 2027. It names Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Garmin Pay, plus contactless cards and payment enabled watches. Your wallet's default card is the one charged.

Two limits: a store that has not switched on Tap to Pay yet may not take a phone wallet, and Walmart says digital wallets cannot be used with Scan and Go. The Payment Methods page for Walmart.com does not list Apple Pay among online options.

Does Walmart accept EBT online?

Yes. Walmart's SNAP EBT help page says the card works in stores, on Walmart.com and in the Walmart app. Online, you add the card to your Walmart wallet, filter for items marked SNAP EBT eligible, and follow the checkout steps to pay for those with the card. Walmart says you can keep shopping non-SNAP items in the same visit. In stores, swipe the EBT card first and enter your PIN.

The card covers only eligible food, not household goods. Walmart points out that the USDA and your state decide eligibility, not Walmart. Contactless EBT, per the Tap to Pay page, works only in select areas.

Does Walmart take Afterpay?

Afterpay is not on Walmart's list of payment methods. Walmart's own pay over time option is OnePay Later, powered by Klarna:

  • It covers Walmart purchases of $25 to $6,000.
  • You choose it at checkout on Walmart.com or in the app, then pick from up to three payment plans.
  • Walmart says you can prequalify with no impact to your credit score, and approval depends on eligibility.

Refunds go back the same way

Walmart's return policy refunds to the original payment in most cases: cash purchases get cash, cards get the same card in up to 7 days, EBT gets EBT typically within 7 days, and Walmart gift cards get credit in up to 3 hours. OnePay Later purchases go back to the OnePay account. See our Walmart return policy summary for the details.
