In Target stores

Target's store list covers:

  • Cards: Target Circle Cards (debit, credit and Mastercard), Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, Diners Club International, JCB and other foreign-bank credit cards, and US-issued debit cards.
  • Contactless and mobile: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and any contactless digital wallet, plus watches and other wearables with payments turned on. Target Circle Cards cannot be added to those wallets, but they work through the Wallet in the Target app.
  • Gift cards: Target GiftCards, merchandise return cards and prepaid Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express gift cards.
  • Cash: US cash; depending on location, some stores may take Canadian dollars or Mexican pesos.
  • Benefits: SNAP EBT and EBT cash, HSA, FSA and HRA cards, and WIC in approved stores.
  • Other: Venmo cards (not Venmo QR codes), and Alipay and campus cash in approved stores.

On Target.com and in the app

Online, Target accepts its own Target Circle Cards, the major credit cards, debit cards run as credit, health savings cards, Target GiftCards, prepaid gift cards from the major networks, PayPal, Apple Pay and Cash App Pay. For paying over time, Target lists Affirm, Sezzle, PayPal Pay in 4, Afterpay, Klarna and Zip.

You can split an online order across up to two credit or debit cards, and Target GiftCards can be combined with a card in the same order.

SNAP EBT

In stores, you swipe your EBT card and choose the SNAP or the EBT cash balance. SNAP pays for eligible items and another payment covers the rest.

Online, add the EBT card in the payment section of your Target account and enter your PIN at checkout. Target accepts SNAP EBT online for shipping, pickup and delivery orders in eligible states, but not EBT cash. A second payment method is needed for anything SNAP does not cover, such as fees, tips or higher-priced substitutions. SNAP cannot pay for Target Plus partner items and cannot be combined with split card payments.

What Target does not take

Target lists personal, business, foreign and cashier's checks, money orders and foreign currency as not accepted (apart from the Canadian dollar and peso exception above). Store gift cards from other merchants are refused too, apart from Starbucks cards at in-store Starbucks counters. Some stores take mall certificates; call ahead.

Payment declined?

Target says it cannot see why a bank declined a card, so call the number on the back of the card. For a Target Circle Credit Card or Mastercard, Target lists Target Card Services at 1-800-424-6888.
