Store policies change. Sam's Club's own payment methods article could not be read on October 26, 2026: its help center refused automated and browser requests. The tap to pay and EBT facts below come from official Walmart and Sam's Club news releases. The list of cards and other payment types is as reported by Upgraded Points (updated August 2026) and SmartAsset (updated September 2026), where both agree. Confirm with Sam's Club before you rely on a payment type.

Quick answers

QuestionShort answer
Does Sam's Club take American Express?Yes, per both sources
Does Sam's Club accept EBT?Yes, SNAP EBT in clubs, including Scan & Go at participating clubs
Does Sam's Club take Apple Pay?Tap to pay is rolling out; all U.S. clubs are planned by the end of 2026

Credit and debit cards

Both sources say Sam's Club accepts all four major card networks: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. Debit cards are accepted too.

Both sources also list Sam's Club and Walmart gift cards as accepted ways to pay.

Cash and checks

Cash and checks work in the clubs, according to both sources. Upgraded Points lists them as in-club payments only, so plan on a card for SamsClub.com.

EBT and SNAP

Upgraded Points lists SNAP EBT cards as an in-club payment method, and SmartAsset lists SNAP as accepted. Sam's Club's own 2022 news release goes further: members can pay with EBT SNAP through Scan & Go in the Sam's Club app at participating clubs. The release called Sam's Club the first retailer to support digital EBT payment for in-club purchases.

The release does not cover online orders, so check with Sam's Club before you plan to use EBT on SamsClub.com.

Apple Pay and tap to pay

In an August 21, 2026 announcement, Walmart said tap to pay would start on August 24 at select Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations, with plans to reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and fuel stations by mid-2027.

The announcement says shoppers can check out with an eligible contactless card, phone or smartwatch, and members can add eligible Sam's Club cards to their digital wallets. It does not name individual wallets such as Apple Pay or Google Pay, so whether yours works at your club depends on whether that club has the new terminals yet. Ask at the register, or keep a physical card as a backup until the rollout is complete.

Scan & Go

Scan & Go lets members scan items with the Sam's Club app and pay as they shop, skipping the checkout line. Walmart's tap to pay announcement lists it among the options members already have.

Before you shop

  • Bring your membership card.
  • If you pay with EBT, ask how your club wants SNAP items rung up.
  • If you plan to tap a phone, check whether your club already has tap to pay.
