Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Trader Joe's General FAQs page, read on October 26, 2026. The official page is the one that applies; if you are unsure about a payment type, ask a Crew Member at your store before you check out.
What Trader Joe's accepts
Trader Joe's lists six ways to pay at the register:
| Payment method | Accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay | Yes | Listed as mobile payment |
| Credit and debit cards | Yes | |
| Cash | Yes | |
| Personal checks | Yes | Up to $150 |
| EBT cards | Yes | |
| Trader Joe's gift cards | Yes | Physical cards only |
Does Trader Joe's take Apple Pay?
Yes. The FAQ names Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay as accepted mobile payments, so you can tap your phone or watch at checkout instead of handing over a card. The page does not list any Trader Joe's app or in-store wallet of its own.
Does Trader Joe's accept EBT?
Yes. EBT cards are on the list of accepted payment methods. The page does not go into which items an EBT benefit covers; those rules come from the benefit program, so check them with your state agency if you are not sure.
Checks, cash and gift cards
Personal checks are accepted for amounts up to $150. For larger trips, a card, cash or a mobile wallet avoids that cap.
Trader Joe's gift cards work only in physical form. The company says it issues and accepts its gift cards only in its stores, and it does not issue or accept printable or digital versions. It explains this as a way to protect the person who bought or received the card. That also means you cannot buy a Trader Joe's gift card online from the company.
You can only pay in a store
Trader Joe's says it does not sell anything online, gift cards included, and offers no curbside pickup or delivery. It also does not work with third-party delivery services, and names Instacart as an example. So every payment method above applies at the register in a Trader Joe's store, not on a website or app. The company adds that there are no authorized online sales of its products and that it does not do business through third-party sites such as Amazon or eBay.
No coupons, memberships or sale prices
Payment at Trader Joe's is simple partly because there is nothing to stack. The FAQ says the store offers no coupons, no membership cards, no discounts and no weekly sales, and runs no special promotions or gift card offers online. Trader Joe's warns that online coupon or gift card offers using its name do not come from the company.
Before you check out
- Bring a physical gift card, not a screenshot or an emailed code.
- Keep checks to $150 or less.
- Use a mobile wallet if you like, since Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay are all accepted.
