Store programs change. This is a summary in our own words of Amazon's own newsroom pages on Amazon Renewed and Amazon Resale, read on October 26, 2026. The product page and the official program pages on Amazon.com are the ones that apply.

Two programs, two kinds of item

Amazon has two places for items that are not sold as new. They are easy to mix up, so here is how Amazon describes each:

Amazon RenewedAmazon Resale
What it sellsRefurbished items that work and look like newUsed, pre-owned and open-box items
Checked byA third-party company inspects and tests each itemAmazon inspects and tests each item
ConditionCleaned, with few visible cosmetic flawsOne of four grades, from Like New to Acceptable
ReturnsRenewed Guarantee: replacement or refund within 90 days of receiptAmazon's regular return policy
Savings Amazon citesUp to 40% off the original priceOver 25% saved on average last year

Amazon Renewed

Renewed covers phones, computers and laptops, tablets, smartwatches, game consoles, cameras, headphones, home entertainment, tools, home and kitchen items, office products and lawn and garden gear. Amazon says each product is professionally inspected and tested by a third party, and cleaned so that it shows little or no wear.

The main safety net is the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. Under it, you can return a Renewed item within 90 days of receiving it for a replacement or a refund. Most new items get 30 days, as our summary of the Amazon return policy shows.

Amazon Resale (Warehouse Deals)

Amazon Resale is Amazon's section for used and open-box goods; its web address still carries the old Warehouse Deals name. Amazon powers on, tests and factory-resets electronics before listing them, and writes a condition note for each item.

GradeWhat Amazon says it means
Like NewWorks perfectly with all essential accessories; the box may be damaged
Very GoodFully working, light use, minor cosmetic flaws; some non-essential accessories may be missing
GoodFully working with moderate wear such as small scratches; valuable accessories may be missing
AcceptableDoes its main job but shows clear use; parts may be missing and may need to be bought

Missing accessories are listed in the item description. Because each Resale item is unique, Amazon cannot replace it with the exact same item in the same condition, though a similar one may be available. Stock changes often.

To find Resale items, use the Amazon Resale home page, or look for a "Buy Used" or "Save with Used" box on a product page and pick a condition.

Is Amazon Renewed worth it?

It depends on the item and the price gap. A few checks help:

  1. Compare the price with new. A refurbished phone or laptop only makes sense when the saving is large enough for you; Amazon's figure is up to 40%.
  2. Read the listing closely. Check what is in the box, such as chargers and cables, before you order.
  3. Test it as soon as it arrives. The 90-day Renewed Guarantee counts from receipt.
  4. Pick the grade carefully on Resale. Good and Acceptable items can lack parts you need, which adds to the real cost.
