Bed Sizes Chart, From Twin to California King

A bed frame is sold by the mattress size it holds, from twin at 38 by 75 inches to California king at 72 by 84; queen is the most common size we list.

The short answer

Bed frames are sold by the mattress size they hold, so the frame size and the mattress size use the same names. The frame itself is a little larger than the mattress on the outside, by an amount that depends on its design, so measure the frame's outer dimensions in the listing before you plan the room.

Bed sizes chart

These are the standard U.S. mattress sizes as listed by mattress maker Amerisleep, which notes that real sizes can differ by about an inch between brands:

SizeWidth x length (inches)
Twin38 x 75
Twin XL38 x 80
Full54 x 75
Queen60 x 80
King76 x 80
California king72 x 84

A California king is narrower and longer than a king. A twin XL is a twin with 5 more inches of length, and two twin XLs side by side match the width and length of a king.

Queen vs full bed size

A queen is 6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full. Amerisleep points out that a couple on a full gets 27 inches of width each, against 30 inches on a queen, and that a full can feel short for people near 6 feet tall. A full suits one sleeper in a smaller room; a queen gives two people more space.

How much weight can a bed frame hold?

There is no standard figure: each maker sets its own limit for its own frame, and the listings on Wiki Shopping do not state it often enough for us to count. Look for the maker's stated weight limit on the product page, and check whether it covers the mattress as well as the sleepers. Center support legs and the number of slats are details worth comparing between frames of the same size.

Pair it with the right mattress

The frame and the mattress should name the same size. Our guide to mattress firmness labels covers the next choice after size.

How we count

Each bed frame on Wiki Shopping has its mattress size read from the store listing. A frame has at most one size; frames whose listing names none are counted as "Not named". The counts change as listings are added or removed.
