The short answer
Desk height is about your body, not a fixed number. Cornell University's ergonomics guide puts the keyboard just below seated elbow height, so your forearms slope gently down while you type. If a fixed desk does not match that height, a height adjustable desk lets you set it exactly.

How to find your desk height
- Sit in your chair with your feet flat and your thighs roughly level.
- Let your upper arms hang loosely at your sides and bend your elbows.
- Measure from the floor to the underside of your forearm. Your keyboard should sit just below that line.
- Subtract the thickness of the keyboard to find the desk surface height.
Do the same while standing, in the shoes you work in, if you are shopping for a standing desk. Wikipedia lists standing desks as ranging from about 28 to 50 inches tall, so check that a desk's stated range covers both of your numbers.
Desk widths on Wiki Shopping
The width decides how much fits on the desk: a laptop only, or two monitors with room to write. These are the most common stated widths on our lists, October 26, 2026.
Some listings convert metric sizes, so a 120 cm desk may appear as 47 or 47.2 inches. L-shaped desks add a second surface at a right angle; measure both legs of the L against your corner.
Is a standing desk worth it?
The research is less clear than the marketing. Wikipedia's summary of the studies says sit-stand desks may cut sitting time by 30 minutes to two hours per working day, but rates that evidence as low quality, and the effect may fade after the first year. Sit-stand workstations may also reduce low back pain at work. There is no international agreement on how long to sit or stand.
A standing desk is most useful if you will actually change position during the day. Standing still for hours is not the goal; moving between sitting and standing is.
Single motor vs dual motor
Electric standing desks list the number of motors, a lift capacity and a height range. Rather than judging by motor count alone, compare those stated numbers:
- Lift capacity: add up your monitors, computer, arms and anything else on the desk, and leave headroom.
- Height range: check that the lowest and highest settings cover your sitting and standing heights.
Hand crank and converter models that sit on an existing desk are other ways to stand without a motor.
