Mattress Types and Thickness, Explained

Memory foam hugs the body and isolates motion, hybrids add coils for bounce and airflow, and most mattresses last 6 to 8 years at 10 to 12 inches thick.

On this page
Bar chart of the 392 mattresses on Wiki Shopping that state a thickness. 11 to 12 inches is the largest group with 119 mattresses, followed by 8 to 10 inches with 109 and 13 inches and up with 105.

The short answer

The two types you will see most are memory foam and hybrid. Memory foam molds closely to your body and keeps a partner's movement from reaching you. A hybrid puts a coil core under thick comfort layers, which adds bounce, firmer edges and more airflow. On Wiki Shopping, 185 of the 393 mattresses listed on October 26, 2026 are hybrids and 139 are memory foam.

Memory foam vs hybrid mattress

This comparison follows the Sleep Foundation's guide:

Memory foamHybrid
InsideMemory foam comfort layers over a dense polyfoam coreComfort layers (foam, latex, microcoils or fiber) over a coil core
FeelClose hug, slow to spring backBalance of contouring and bounce
HeatCan trap heatUsually sleeps cooler, since air moves through the coils
EdgesNot ratedSturdy edges
MotionExcellent motion isolationLittle motion transfer with pocketed coils
Queen price (guide's range)$800 to $2,500$1,200 to $2,000

Hybrids with Bonnell or continuous wire coils pass more motion than those with pocketed coils, so check the coil type if you share the bed.

How long does a mattress last?

The Sleep Foundation gives 6 to 8 years as a general guide, not a fixed rule. Latex is the most durable type and can last beyond 8 years. Lower quality all-foam beds wear first, through body impressions, and cheap innerspring beds through sagging. As signs of durability, the guide points to polyfoam of 1.7 pounds per cubic foot or more, memory foam of 5 or more, and thicker (lower gauge) coils.

Time to replace it, by the same guide:

  • It sags, dips or is damaged in places.
  • It is noisier than it used to be.
  • You wake up stiff, or sleep better away from home.

The Sleep Foundation calls 10 to 12 inches standard and the most common thickness, and says the support core should make up at least half of it. Its guide by body and sleep position:

  • Under 130 lbs: at least 12 inches, with a generous comfort layer.
  • 130 to 230 lbs: 10 to 12 inches is usually enough.
  • Over 230 lbs: 12 to 14 inches or more, with a sturdy core.
  • Side sleepers: at least 12 inches; stomach sleepers: around 10 inches.

A very tall mattress on a tall bed frame can be hard to get in and out of, so add the two heights before you buy.

Firmness is a separate choice from type; see mattress firmness. For dimensions, see bed sizes, or shop hybrid, memory foam and cooling mattresses.

How we count

Each mattress on Wiki Shopping is grouped by the type and thickness its store listing states. The thickness ranges on our filter pages split at 8, 10 and 12 inches, so they do not match the guide's labels exactly. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
