Sheet Thread Count, Percale vs Sateen, and Sizes
Thread count is the number of threads in one square inch of fabric, counted both ways; the weave, percale or sateen, changes the feel more than the count.

The short answer
Thread count is how many threads run through one square inch of fabric, adding the threads that run lengthwise (the warp) to those that run across (the weft). It is a North American marketing term more than a textile industry measure. A higher count can mean a finer, denser cloth, but the weave and the yarn matter at least as much.
What thread count means, and how it gets inflated
The usual industry practice, which the National Textile Association bases on ASTM International methods, counts each yarn as one thread, even when the yarn is twisted from two or three finer strands (a plied yarn). Some very high counts on labels come from counting every strand inside each plied yarn instead. In an August 2005 letter to the association, the Federal Trade Commission agreed that shoppers could be misled by counts inflated this way.
So a sheet labeled 1,000 thread count may be woven from about 250 two-ply yarns each way. When a count looks very high, check the listing for "single-ply" or "two-ply" before comparing it with another sheet.
Percale vs sateen
The two common cotton sheet weaves feel different even at the same count:
| Percale | Sateen | |
|---|---|---|
| Weave | Plain: one thread over, one under | Satin: a thread floats over several, then under one |
| Feel | Crisp, firm, matte | Smooth, soft, with a sheen |
| Durability | Washes well, holds up | Floats can snag and fray more easily |
| Typical count | About 180 and up | Varies |
The floats are what give sateen its shine: more of each thread lies on the surface. They are also why a plain weave like percale is the tougher of the two. Pick percale if you want a crisp, matte sheet; pick sateen for a smooth drape with some shine.
What size sheets for a queen bed
Sheets are sold by mattress size, and a queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches, according to mattress maker Amerisleep. Queen sheets fit any standard queen mattress, but the fitted sheet also has to match the mattress depth. Measure your mattress from the bottom edge to the top, including any topper, and choose a fitted sheet whose pocket is deeper than that, so the corners stay on.
A split king uses two twin XL fitted sheets with one king flat sheet or duvet, per Amerisleep. See our bed sizes chart for every standard mattress.

How we count
Each listing's type and pack size are read from its store listing and grouped into type pages. We counted those pages in a read-only query of our page data on October 26, 2026. Listings with no stated type are not in the table. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
