What Size Christmas Tree Do You Need?

Measure floor to ceiling and leave at least a foot for the stand and topper; 7 to 7.5 feet is the most common artificial tree height we list.

The short answer

Measure from the floor to the ceiling where the tree will stand, then choose a tree at least a foot shorter. That gap leaves room for the stand, which lifts the tree, and for a topper. Home guide Bob Vila gives the same rule and the same example: with an 8-foot ceiling, a 7-foot tree fits.

Then check the floor space. A full tree spreads wide at the bottom; a slim or pencil tree fits a narrow corner or a small room.

By the one-foot rule, a 7-foot tree fits an 8-foot ceiling, while a 7.5-foot tree needs at least 8.5 feet and a 9-foot tree at least 10 feet. Measure before you pick from the taller groups.

Width and shape

Height is only half the fit. Check the listing for the tree's diameter at its widest point, near the bottom branches. Measure the floor area, leaving space to walk around it. Wiki Shopping sorts trees by shape: full, slim, pencil and tabletop.

Pre-lit vs unlit Christmas tree

A pre-lit tree comes with lights already strung on its branches, so setup is faster and the lights are spread evenly. An unlit tree lets you pick your own lights and change them later. Of the trees on Wiki Shopping, 528 are pre-lit and 77 are unlit on October 26, 2026; the other 216 listings do not say.

With a pre-lit tree, check the light color too: Wiki Shopping lists warm white and multicolor options.

How many lights for a 7-foot tree?

There is no single standard. Decorating guides give rules of thumb per foot of height, and they differ widely, because the right count depends on how bright you want the tree. For a pre-lit tree, the listing states its bulb count: compare that number across trees of the same height.

If you add your own incandescent strings, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises never linking more than three sets together. It also tells buyers of artificial trees to look for a "Fire Resistant" label.

How we count

Each tree on Wiki Shopping has its height and lighting read from the store listing. A tree has at most one height and one lighting value; listings that give none are counted as "Not stated". The counts change as listings are added or removed.
