What Size Coffee Table Do You Need?
A common rule makes a coffee table about two thirds as long as the sofa, set 16 to 18 inches from the seat; most tables on our lists are 30 to 39 inches long.

The short answer
No standard fixes the size of a coffee table. The rule most furniture guides repeat is about proportion: furniture maker Castlery suggests a table about two thirds the length of the sofa it serves. A 72 inch sofa then pairs with a table of about 48 inches, and a 90 inch sofa with one of about 60 inches.
On Wiki Shopping, 203 of the 374 coffee tables listed on October 26, 2026 state a length. The largest group is 30 to 39 inches long (97 tables).
Length: the two thirds rule
Measure your sofa from the outside of one arm to the other, then take about two thirds. Castlery's guide gives these pairings:

A table much shorter than that leaves the end seats without a surface within reach. A much longer one crowds the walkway at each end. With a sectional, apply the rule to the side people sit along most, or use two smaller tables.
How far from the sofa?
Castlery's coffee table guide puts the gap at 16 to 18 inches between the front edge of the sofa and the table, and its sofa guide gives a slightly wider range of 16 to 20 inches. That is close enough to set a cup down without leaning, with room for your knees. In a tight room the table can sit a little closer, which feels cozier but leaves less legroom.
Height next to the sofa
Height is the third number on a listing, measured from the floor to the tabletop. Read it beside the seat height of your sofa, from its listing or your own tape measure. A table top near the seat makes it easy to reach from a sitting position; a much lower one suits a low, lounging sofa, and a lift-top table raises the surface for eating or working. Measure the seat at the front edge, where the cushion settles when you sit.

Shape changes how a length works in the room. Round and square tables have no sharp corners at the ends and often suit a short sofa or a seating group set around them. Rectangular tables follow the line of a long sofa.
