Rug Sizes Guide, From 5x7 to 9x12

Pick a rug by the furniture it has to hold, not by the room alone; an 8x10 suits a living room of about 11 by 13 feet, while a 5x7 fits under a coffee table.

The short answer

Start with the furniture, not the floor. A rug looks right when the main pieces in the room either sit on it or clearly stay off it. For most living rooms that means an 8x10; a 5x7 works only in a small room or as a rug under the coffee table.

Sizes are width by length in feet. Before you buy, mark the size on the floor with painter's tape.

Living room rug size guide

Rug maker Ruggable publishes these pairings of rug size and living room size:

Rug sizeRoom it fitsFloor left around it
10x14At least 11.5 x 15.5 ft18 to 36 inches
9x1212 x 18 ft or larger, or an open planNot stated
8x10About 11 x 13 ft, or an open plan12 to 18 inches
6x911 x 13 ft or smallerAbout 2 feet each side
5x7A small living roomSits under a coffee table
4x6A very small room, or under a coffee tableFront legs off the rug

The pattern: pick the largest size that still leaves a strip of bare floor at the walls.

5x7 vs 8x10 rug

An 8x10 covers 80 square feet, a 5x7 only 35. That decides how the seating meets the rug:

  • 8x10: large enough for the front legs of the sofa and chairs to rest on the rug, which ties the group together. Ruggable's advice for larger rooms is that all major furniture should touch the rug.
  • 5x7: usually too small to reach under a sofa, so it sits as an island under the coffee table with every leg off the rug, or anchors two chairs by a fireplace.

The middle ground is the one to avoid: a rug where the sofa legs land half on and half off the edge. If the front legs will not reach comfortably, size down so no legs touch, or size up.

Bedroom and dining room

In a bedroom, the rug usually goes under the lower part of the bed so there is soft floor on both sides. Check your bed's width in our bed sizes chart and add the strip you want on each side.

Under a dining table, a chair should stay on the rug when pulled out, or its back legs catch on the edge.

Hallways take a runner. Long, narrow sizes such as 2x6 and 2x8 are runners, and the 2x6 is the most common rug size on Wiki Shopping.

How we count

Each rug's size is read from its store listing and placed on the matching size page. We counted each size page in a read-only query of our page data on October 26, 2026. Of the 702 rugs listed that day, those with no size, or a size without its own page, are left out. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
