Bluetooth Trackers, Explained

A Bluetooth tracker talks to your phone only over a short radio link, then leans on a network of other phones to report where it is when you are far away.

The short answer

A Bluetooth tracker is a small tag you clip to keys, a bag or a suitcase. Up close, your phone finds it over Bluetooth and can make it ring. Far away, the tag depends on other people's phones: any nearby phone in the maker's network picks up its signal and passes the location along, so you see it on a map.

That means two different "ranges" matter:

  • Direct range: how far your own phone can hear the tag.
  • Network reach: how many phones in the area belong to the tracker's finding network.

How far does a Bluetooth tracker work?

There is no single number. The Bluetooth SIG, the group behind the standard, says a reliable Bluetooth link can reach anywhere from under a meter to more than a kilometer, depending on how the device is built. The main factors it lists:

  • Radio band: Bluetooth runs in the 2.4 GHz band.
  • Transmit power: a stronger signal carries farther but drains the battery faster.
  • Antenna and receiver design: both ends of the link matter.
  • Obstacles: walls, windows, metal, concrete and even humidity weaken the signal.

So a maker's range figure is a best case in open air; indoors, expect less. When the tag is beyond direct range, the network takes over, which is why a tracker can show a lost bag in another city.

AirTag vs Tile and other trackers

Apple's AirTag uses Apple's Find My network. Apple says that network can draw on more than a billion iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, and that an AirTag needs an iPhone or iPad to set up. Apple's spec sheet lists:

AirTag specApple's figure
BatteryUser-replaceable CR2032 coin cell
Battery lifeMore than a year on one battery
Water and dustIP67, up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
Finding up closeBluetooth, plus Ultra Wideband for direction

Tile and other brands run their own finding networks and apps. We could not load Tile's own spec pages when writing this, so check range, battery and phone support on the maker's page before you buy. The questions to ask of any tracker are the same:

  1. Does it work with your phone (iPhone, Android or both)?
  2. How large is the finding network where you live and travel?
  3. Is the battery replaceable, and what kind does it take?
  4. Does it have a water rating?

How long does an AirTag battery last?

Apple says more than a year, and notes that real life varies with how often the tag plays sounds or uses Precision Finding, the temperature and the replacement battery brand. When the battery runs low, your iPhone shows a notice and the Find My app marks the tag Low Battery.

To replace it, Apple's steps are: press and twist off the steel cover, swap in a new CR2032 3V lithium coin cell with the positive side up, and listen for the sound that confirms it is connected. Apple warns that some bitter-coated CR2032 cells may not work, so look for packs labeled compatible with AirTag, and keep coin cells away from children.
