Building Toy Ages: DUPLO vs LEGO vs Magnetic Tiles
Big DUPLO bricks are marked from age 1 or 2, magnetic tiles from 3 and standard LEGO from 4 or 5; the age on the box mostly tracks piece size and small parts.

The short answer
The age on a building set is mostly about piece size. Toys meant for children under 3 must pass the federal small parts rule, so sets for the youngest builders use big pieces, and sets with small bricks start at 4 or older.
| Set | Type | Age on the box |
|---|---|---|
| LEGO DUPLO Brick Box (10913) | Large bricks | 1+ |
| LEGO DUPLO Train Tunnel and Tracks (10425) | Large bricks | 2+ |
| Magna-Tiles Classic 32-piece set | Magnetic tiles | 3+ |
| LEGO Classic Bricks Bricks Plates (11717) | Standard bricks | 4 to 99 |
| LEGO Classic Creative Vehicles (11036) | Standard bricks | 5+ |
On Wiki Shopping, 84 building toys were listed in toys and games on October 26, 2026: 66 as building sets, 6 as magnetic building toys, and 42 from LEGO.
Why the age line falls at 3
Under 16 CFR part 1501, a toy intended for children under 3 may not have any piece, or any piece that breaks off in use and abuse testing, small enough to fit entirely inside the federal test cylinder. That is why the youngest sets use oversized parts and why boxes with small pieces carry an age of 3 or older along with a choking warning.
The age is a safety and skill floor, not a ceiling: older kids still enjoy big bricks. Keep small-piece sets away from younger siblings.
DUPLO vs LEGO: which age
DUPLO bricks are much larger than standard LEGO bricks. A typical path by the ages printed on the sets above:
- About 1 to 3: DUPLO, with sets marked 1+ or 2+. Big pieces are easy to grip and pull apart.
- 4 and up: standard LEGO bricks, starting with open-ended tubs like the Classic line before following longer instruction books.
- Older kids: sets marked 5+ and up add smaller parts and longer builds.
What age are magnetic tiles for
Magna-Tiles marks its Classic starter set and its smaller microMAGS sets for ages 3 and up. The flat tiles snap together by magnetism rather than pressure, which suits small hands that cannot yet press bricks together.
Magna-Tiles still asks for active adult supervision for young children who put toys in their mouths, and says children should not play with damaged tiles. If a child swallows or inhales a loose magnet, the company says to seek medical care at once and call 9-1-1.
Magnetic tiles vs LEGO
| Magnetic tiles | LEGO bricks | |
|---|---|---|
| How pieces join | Magnets | Studs pressed into tubes |
| Effort to connect | Very low | Needs finger strength |
| Builds | Big, quick, hollow shapes | Detailed models that hold together |
| Starting age, sets above | 3+ | 4+ |
The two also work in sequence: tiles for big, fast structures in the preschool years, then bricks as fine motor control grows.
