Scooter Types by Age: 3 Wheels vs 2 Wheels

Three-wheel lean-to-steer scooters suit ages 2 to 5, bigger scooters fit school-age kids, and the maker's maximum rider weight matters as much as age.

The short answer

Scooters for children come in two layouts:

  • Three wheels (two in front, one in back): the rider leans to steer, and the scooter is stable from the first ride. This is the usual first scooter for ages 2 to 5.
  • Two wheels: the rider turns the handlebar to steer, like a bicycle, and needs more balance. Makers start these around age 6.

Every scooter also has a maximum rider weight. Check it along with the age range, because a child can outgrow a scooter by weight before age.

Sizes by age in one maker's line

Micro Kickboard publishes an age range and a maximum rider weight for each model:

Maxi LED35 to 12110 lb5.5 lb

Sprite Suspension28+220 lb9 lb

The maker's FAQ adds that its adult Suspension scooter is built for riders up to 250 lb.

What size scooter for a 5 year old

Age 5 is where the small and large three-wheelers overlap. Micro's FAQ says to consider a child's size as well as age: the Mini is usually right for ages 2 to 5, the Maxi for ages 5 to 12, and the suggested minimum weight for the Maxi is 40 lb. A small 5-year-old under that weight is better served by the smaller scooter; a taller, heavier child can move up.

A height-adjustable handlebar also helps a scooter fit for longer. The Maxi's bar extends from 24 to 34 inches above the deck.

Micro's FAQ explains that on its three-wheel kickboards the handlebar is not meant to twist; the rider steers by shifting weight. Its two-wheel Sprite scooters fold for carrying, and the larger Kickboard Reloaded stays standing when the rider steps off.

Scooter weight limit

The maximum rider weight is the heaviest rider the maker rates the scooter for. In Micro's line it doubles from 110 lb on the Mini and Maxi to 220 lb on the larger models. On Wiki Shopping, 14 kids' scooters list a 110 lb rating and 6 list a 165 lb rating.

Kick or electric

Of the 144 kids' scooters listed under toys and games on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 50 are listed as kick scooters and 13 as electric scooters. Whatever the type, Micro recommends a helmet and knee pads for every ride.

How we count

Scooter counts come from a read-only query of our listing data on October 26, 2026. Listings that do not state a type or weight rating are left out of those counts. Ages and weights in the tables come from the maker's own pages.
