Deep Fryer Sizes and Oil Capacity
Deep fryers are sized by the oil they hold, from about 4 cups in a small fryer to 5 quarts in a family model; more oil means bigger batches and more to buy.

The short answer
A deep fryer's size is its oil capacity. Small fryers hold about 4 to 6 cups of oil and cook a few servings at a time. Family-size fryers hold 3 to 5 quarts and fry bigger batches with less waiting between them. Pick the smallest size that cooks a full meal for your household in one or two batches.
How much oil does a deep fryer hold
Presto, for example, publishes the oil capacity of each model:
| Presto model | Oil capacity | In cups | Food capacity (Presto) | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FryDaddy | 4 cups | 4 | Four big servings | 1,200 W |
| 1-liter Stainless Steel | 1 liter (1.1 quarts) | About 4.4 | Not stated | 1,000 W |
| GranPappy | 6 cups | 6 | Six big servings | 1,500 W |
| Stainless Steel ProFry | 3 quarts | 12 | 8 cups of food | 1,800 W |
| Dual Basket ProFry | 5 quarts | 20 | 12 cups of food | 1,800 W |
A quart is 4 cups, which is how the cup column is worked out. The small FryDaddy and GranPappy work out to one cup of oil per big serving, by Presto's own figures.
What size deep fryer do you need
- One or two people, occasional frying: a 4-cup or 1-liter fryer. It heats a small amount of oil quickly and is easy to store.
- A family: a 6-cup fryer works for snacks, but a 3-quart model fries a full batch of fries or chicken in fewer rounds.
- Big batches, parties, two foods at once: a 5-quart dual basket fryer, which lets you fry two smaller batches side by side.
Power matters as the size goes up. The large Presto models use an 1,800-watt immersion element, which the maker says gives quick preheating and fast recovery of the oil temperature after food goes in. Cold food drops the oil temperature, so recovery speed matters most for big batches.
Wiki Shopping lists 21 deep fryers and 48 air fryers under fryers, in the appliances department. An air fryer uses hot air and little or no oil, so oil capacity does not apply to it.
How often to change deep fryer oil
There is no fixed number of uses, because it depends on what you fry and how hot. Signs that it is time for fresh oil:
- The oil has turned dark and smells off or fishy.
- It smokes at the usual frying temperature.
- It foams up heavily or feels thick and sticky.
To get more uses out of it, let the oil cool, strain out crumbs and store it covered. Presto's FryDaddy and GranPappy have snap-on lids for keeping oil in the fryer between uses. Your fryer's manual is the best guide for the specific model.
How we count
Oil capacities, food capacities and wattages come from Presto's product pages. The cup column converts quarts at 4 cups per quart, and uses Presto's own 1.1 quart figure for the 1-liter fryer. The deep fryer and air fryer counts come from Wiki Shopping listing data on October 26, 2026.
