Espresso Machine Types Explained

A semi-automatic machine leaves grinding, tamping and shot timing to you, a super-automatic does it all with a button, and capsule and lever models fill gaps.

The short answer

Every espresso machine pushes hot water through finely ground, packed coffee under pressure. The types differ in how much of the job they leave to you:

  • Semi-automatic: you grind, dose and tamp the coffee, lock in the portafilter and start and stop the shot. The machine heats the water and runs the pump.
  • Super-automatic: the machine grinds the beans, packs the coffee, brews and dumps the used grounds. You press a button.
  • Capsule: a sealed pod replaces the grinding and tamping. Fast and tidy, but you are tied to the pods.
  • Lever: you pull a lever to make the pressure by hand or with a spring. The most hands-on of all.
  • Portable: small hand-pumped or battery machines for travel and camping.

Semi-automatic vs super-automatic espresso machine

The trade is control against convenience.

A semi-automatic machine rewards practice. Grind size, dose, tamp and shot time all change the taste, and you set each one. De'Longhi notes, for its own pump machines, that a good shot depends on grinding, dosing and tamping correctly. Most semi-automatics need a separate grinder, although 594 machines on Wiki Shopping have a built-in grinder. Milk is steamed by hand with a wand: 217 machines list a steam wand.

A super-automatic machine gives you the same drink every time with no skill needed and little mess. It usually takes more counter space and needs regular cleaning of the brew unit and milk lines. Many also make milk drinks on their own: 98 machines list an automatic milk system.

How to choose an espresso machine

  • You enjoy the process and want cafe-style latte art: a semi-automatic with a steam wand, plus a good grinder if it has none.
  • You want a latte before work with no fuss: a super-automatic with an automatic milk system.
  • You want espresso quickly and do not mind pods: a capsule machine.
  • You drink espresso on trips: a portable machine.

Do not shop by the bar number on the box. As our guide to pump pressure explains, that is the pump's rating: De'Longhi says its 15-bar Stilosa machines extract at around 9 bar.

Is a super-automatic espresso machine worth it

It is worth it if you drink several espresso drinks a day, share the machine with people who do not want to learn the craft, or value speed over fine control. If you make one drink a day and like to tinker, a semi-automatic and a grinder give you more control.

How we count

Machine type, grinder and milk system are read from each machine's store listing. Machines that do not state a value are left out of that count. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
