Keg Sizes: What Fits in a Kegerator
A full-size kegerator takes one half barrel keg (15.5 gallons, about 165 12-ounce beers) or two slim kegs; check the cabinet against keg height and diameter.

The short answer
US keg names are fractions of a 31-gallon beer barrel: a "half barrel" holds 15.5 gallons and a "sixth barrel" about 5.16. A standard full-size kegerator is built around the half barrel. The same cabinet usually takes two of the slimmer kegs instead, so you can pour two beers.
Before you buy, compare three numbers: the keg's height, the keg's diameter and the kegerator's inside space, including any room the tower lines or a CO2 tank take up.

Half barrel vs quarter barrel keg
A half barrel holds twice the beer of a quarter barrel, 165 servings against 82. The stubby quarter has the same 16 1/8 inch diameter as the half barrel but stands only 13 7/8 inches tall and weighs 87 pounds full instead of 160. That makes it easier to lift, and it suits shorter cabinets.
The slim quarter holds the same 7.75 gallons in a tall, narrow shape. Kegworks notes it is popular in dual-tap kegerators, since two narrow kegs can stand side by side where one wide keg would go.
What size keg fits in a kegerator
- One half barrel: Kegworks says the half barrel fits any standard-size kegerator. If the cabinet takes this keg, it takes any of the shorter or narrower US kegs too, at least one at a time.
- Two kegs side by side: two sixth barrels fit in one standard cabinet, per Kegworks. Slim quarters are the other common pair.
- Compact and narrow units: check the listed keg sizes. A 15-inch built-in unit may not take a 16 1/8 inch wide keg.
- 50 liter imports: these often use a different coupler from the US Sankey D type, so confirm the coupler before you buy the keg.
