Golf Simulator Space and Launch Monitors, Explained

A home golf simulator room is usually about 10 feet high, 10 to 14 feet wide and 15 to 20 feet deep; radar launch monitors need more depth than camera units.

The short answer

A home golf simulator has three parts: a launch monitor that measures each shot, software that shows the ball flying down a virtual hole, and a hitting area with a mat and an impact screen or net. The room has to fit a full driver swing and give the launch monitor enough room to read the ball.

Simulator retailer Carl's Place gives these figures:

MeasurementMinimumRecommended
Ceiling height8 to 9 ft (limited swings)10 ft or more
Room width10 ft (hitting area off center)14 ft or more (centered, for right and left handed players)
Total room depth15 ft18 to 20 ft
Screen to ball10 ft10 to 12 ft
Behind the ball4 ft7 ft
Screen to wall behind itAbout 1 ftAbout 1 ft

Ceiling height comes first

The ceiling is the one measurement you usually cannot change. Taller golfers and upright swings need more headroom than the minimum. A simple test before you buy: take your driver into the room and make slow practice swings where you would stand, checking the ceiling and both side walls.

Radar vs camera launch monitors

The type of launch monitor changes how deep the room must be:

  • Radar units sit behind the golfer and track the ball in flight. BenQ, which makes simulator projectors, notes that radar needs a clear view of the ball's flight over a minimum distance, so it needs more room than a camera unit. PlayBetter's guide for the Garmin Approach R10, a radar unit, places it 6 to 8 feet behind the ball with at least 8 feet of open space in front, and recommends a room about 10 feet wide, 21 feet deep and 9 feet high (about 14 feet deep at the least).
  • Camera units (also called photometric) sit beside the ball and read it at impact, so they only need to see the ball and the area just ahead of it. BenQ suggests a camera unit for rooms within about 15 feet of depth.
  • Overhead cameras mount on the ceiling above the hitting area. They keep the floor clear, but BenQ says they need more space than portable units.

UK installer GolfBays lists a minimum depth of 4 meters for a camera system and 5 meters for a radar system, with a 3 meter width and 2.8 meter height.

What is listed on Wiki Shopping

Of the 76 golf simulator listings on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 57 are launch monitors, 14 are enclosures and 4 are complete simulator packages. 26 listings are portable launch monitors, and 20 add course GPS for use on the course too.

Planning your space

  1. Measure ceiling height, width and depth, and note lights, beams or doors in the swing path.
  2. Pick the launch monitor type that fits your depth: camera for short rooms, radar where you have the length.
  3. Check the launch monitor maker's own setup guide for its exact distances, since they vary by model.
  4. Leave about a foot between the screen and the wall behind it.
