Hair Dryer Watts, Ionic and Ceramic, Explained

Watts are the power a hair dryer draws, ionic means it gives off negative ions to cut static and frizz, and ceramic is a heater that gives off infrared heat.

On this page
Bar chart of hair dryers on Wiki Shopping by stated wattage. 1875 watts is the largest group with 47 dryers, followed by under 1600 watts with 36.

The short answer

Three words on a hair dryer box do most of the work:

  • Watts: the electrical power the dryer draws, shared between the heater and the motor. More watts means more heating power available.
  • Ionic: the dryer gives off negative ions. Makers say they offset the static charge on wet hair, which cuts frizz and speeds drying.
  • Ceramic: describes the heater or its coating. Makers say ceramic gives off far-infrared heat that is gentler on the hair surface.

Ionic and ceramic are not opposites. Many dryers list both, such as Hot Tools' Ionic Ceramic Salon dryer.

What wattage for thick hair

The maker guides we read do not set a fixed watt number per hair type. Here is what the listings show:

Stated wattageHair dryers on Wiki Shopping
Under 1600 W36
1600 to 1874 W13
1875 W47
Over 1875 W6

So 1875 W is the most common wattage among the dryers that state one, and full-size salon-style models such as the Hot Tools dryer above sit at that figure.

For thick or coarse hair, the setting matters as much as the rating. Wella, the salon hair care brand, suggests starting medium to coarse hair on a medium heat setting and saving the hottest setting for when you are in a rush. Fine to medium hair should stay on low or moderate heat, and fine or damaged hair does best on the lowest speed. A dryer with more watts and several heat steps gives you room to do both.

Ionic vs ceramic hair dryer

What does ionic mean on a hair dryer

Wella explains it like this: wet hair picks up a positive charge, which shows up as static and frizz. An ionic dryer releases negative ions that balance that charge, so hair is smoother and easier to style. Hot Tools sells its ion feature for frizz reduction and faster drying. These are maker explanations, not independent tests.

Wella also suggests turning the heat down when you use an ionic dryer.

Features worth checking

  • Heat and speed settings: the Hot Tools model has 6 combined options. More steps give finer control.
  • Cool shot: a button for a blast of cool air to set the style.
  • Attachments: a concentrator nozzle for smooth blowouts, and a diffuser for wavy, curly and coily hair, which spreads the airflow so curls are not blown around.
  • Lint filter: a removable filter keeps the motor clean.
  • Weight: the Hot Tools dryer weighs 13.82 oz; lighter dryers are easier on the arms.

On Wiki Shopping, 95 dryers list ionic technology, 36 list ceramic or tourmaline, 64 include a diffuser and 12 are dual voltage for travel abroad.

How we count

Wattage and features are read from each dryer's store listing; Wiki Shopping listed 191 hair dryers on October 26, 2026. Dryers that do not state a wattage or feature are left out of those counts, and a dryer can count in more than one feature. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
