The short answer

A curling iron's barrel size is its diameter, and it sets the size of the curl. Hair wrapped around a thin barrel makes a small, tight curl; a wide barrel makes a big, loose curl or a gentle wave.

Hot Tools, a maker of salon styling tools, names its tutorials after the curl each barrel makes. That gives a simple guide:

BarrelCurl style in Hot Tools' tutorials
1/2 inchSpiral curls
3/4 inchDefined curls
1 inchBeachy waves, tousled curls
1 1/4 inchLoose curls
1 1/2 inchBig loose curls, tousled waves
2 inchBody curls

1 inch vs 1.25 inch curling iron

These two sizes sit in the middle of the range. Hot Tools offers its extra-long barrel iron in both and describes the difference like this:

  • 1 inch: made for bouncy curls. Its tutorials also use a 1 inch iron for beachy waves and tousled curls.
  • 1 1/4 inch: made for tousled curls. Its tutorials use the 1 1/4 inch iron for loose curls.

So the 1 inch gives a slightly tighter, springier curl, and the 1 1/4 inch a slightly looser, softer one. Neither is wrong; pick the one closest to the curl you want.

Hair length matters too. Hot Tools makes an extra-long barrel for long hair, 2 inches longer than its regular barrel, so there is room to wrap long lengths.

What size curling iron for beach waves

Beach waves are loose, uneven bends rather than round curls. Hot Tools shows the look three ways:

  • a 1 inch curling iron for beachy waves,
  • a 5/8 inch curling wand for beachy waves,
  • a 1 1/2 inch curling iron for tousled waves.

The 1 inch iron is the middle ground. Following the barrel rule above, the wider iron gives a looser bend and the thin wand a smaller one.

Curling irons, wands and multi-stylers

  • Curling iron: a barrel with a spring clamp that holds the ends of the hair.
  • Curling wand: a barrel with no clamp; you wrap the hair around it by hand. Hot Tools' tutorials use wands from 5/8 inch to 1 1/4 inch.
  • Tapered barrel: narrower at the tip than at the base, for curls that vary in size along their length.
  • Multi-styler: one handle with swappable heads, such as different barrels, a brush or a straightener, so one tool covers several styles.
