Foil vs Rotary Electric Shavers, Explained

A foil shaver swings blades back and forth under a thin metal screen, a rotary shaver spins blades under round heads, and wet and dry models work in showers.

The short answer

Electric shavers come in two head designs:

  • Foil: a straight head. Blades swing back and forth under a thin, perforated metal foil, and the holes catch the hairs. You shave in straight lines.
  • Rotary: several round heads. Each has blades that spin and move on their own, so they follow the curves of the face and catch hairs that grow at different angles.

Neither is better for everyone. Philips, which makes both kinds, says the choice comes down to your hair, your skin and the stroke you are used to.

Foil vs rotary shaver

FoilRotary
HeadStraight, under a perforated foilRound heads with spinning blades
StrokeStraight linesCircles, follows contours
SuitsFiner hair, daily shaving, sensitive skinThicker or coarser hair, mixed growth directions
Longer hairSuits regular shavingMay need a trimmer first

Philips puts foil shavers forward for people who shave every day and for sensitive skin, because the foil keeps a small gap between blade and skin. It suggests rotary heads for thicker hair, hair that grows in several directions and people who shave less often.

On Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 149 electric shavers listed a foil cutting system and 67 listed a rotary one.

Wet vs dry electric shaver

A dry shaver is used on clean, dry skin. A wet and dry shaver can also be used with shaving foam or gel, or in the shower. Braun's guide says a wet shave normally gives the closest result with the least irritation, while a dry shave is quicker and lets you go in either direction. If your skin turns red after a dry shave, Braun suggests lathering up first.

Check the listing before you take a shaver into the shower: only models sold as wet and dry or waterproof are made for water. On Wiki Shopping, 207 shavers listed wet and dry use and 165 listed waterproof.

How long does an electric shaver last

The part that wears out first is the cutting head, not the motor. Makers give these replacement intervals:

MakerPartReplace every
BraunFoil and cutter block18 months
Philips (Series 1000, 3000, X3000)Shaving heads2 years

Braun bases its interval on regular cleaning and average shaving, and notes its cutter blocks do not sharpen themselves. It advises changing the foil and the cutter together. Philips says to replace sooner if the shave is less close, takes longer or more passes, or if the shaver pulls at hairs. Always buy the replacement head made for your exact model number.

The body itself lasts as long as its motor and battery hold up. Warranty length is one clue to what the maker expects: on Philips' own page, its i9000 shavers carry 5-year or 7-year warranties.

How we count

Cutting system and features are read from each shaver's store listing; Wiki Shopping listed 503 electric shavers on October 26, 2026. A shaver can count in more than one feature, and shavers that do not state a feature are left out of that count. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
