Gel vs Regular Nail Polish, Explained
Regular polish air dries and OPI rates it at up to 7 days of wear, while gel hardens under a lamp and lasts about 3 weeks; gel-like polish skips the lamp.

The short answer
The difference is how the polish sets:
- Regular polish (nail lacquer) dries in the air as its solvents evaporate. It is quick to put on and comes off with ordinary remover, but it chips sooner.
- Gel polish stays soft until you cure it under a gel lamp, coat by coat. It lasts weeks instead of days, but it needs a lamp to apply and a soak to remove.
Between the two sit gel-like or long-wear polishes, which give a glossier, thicker finish without a lamp.
Gel vs regular nail polish
| Regular polish | Gel polish | |
|---|---|---|
| How it sets | Air dries | Cures under a lamp |
| Wear (maker rating) | Up to 7 days (OPI) | 3 weeks (OPI) |
| Steps | Base coat, two color coats, top coat | Same, with each coat cured |
| Removal | Regular polish remover | Soak off with remover wraps |
OPI's 7-day rating for its Nail Lacquer assumes you use its base coat and top coat with the color, its 3-step system. Its GelColor gel polish is rated for 3 weeks of wear.
How long does gel polish last
Makers put gel at about three weeks or a little more:
- OPI GelColor: 3 weeks of wear.
- CND: says the standard for a gel manicure is three to four weeks before it needs to be redone.
For comparison, CND puts dip powder at two to three weeks. How long yours lasts depends on how well the nail was prepped and how much wear and tear your hands see. Capping the free edge, painting a little polish over the tip of the nail, helps prevent chips with both gel and regular polish, and both OPI guides include that step.
CND also points out that gel itself does not damage nails; damage comes from poor application or from picking, prying or peeling the coating off.
Do you need a UV lamp for gel polish
For true gel polish, yes. Gel does not dry in air; each coat has to be cured under a lamp. OPI's steps for GelColor cure the base coat, each of two color coats and the top coat for 30 seconds each in its Star Light gel lamp.
Removing gel takes longer too. OPI's removal steps wrap each nail in a pad soaked with remover and leave it for 15 minutes.
Gel-like polishes need no lamp. Sally Hansen's Miracle Gel is sold as a gel-like polish with no UV light needed: two color coats, each left to dry for 5 minutes, then its top coat. OPI's Infinite Shine is a similar 3-step long-wear lacquer that air dries in 1 to 2 minutes per coat. These last longer than plain lacquer but are still air-dry polishes.
| Type | Lamp needed | How it sets |
|---|---|---|
| Regular polish | No | Air dries |
| Gel-like long-wear polish | No | Air dries |
| Gel polish | Yes | Cures coat by coat |
